Owned-and-operated Station
In the broadcasting industry, an owned-and-operated station (frequently abbreviated as an O&O) usually refers to a television or radio station owned by the network with which it is associated. This distinguishes such a station from an affiliate, which is independently owned and carries network programming by contract. The concept of an O&O is clearly defined in the United States and Canada (and to some extent, several other countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Japan), where network-owned stations had historically been the exception rather than the rule. In such places, broadcasting licenses are generally issued on a local (rather than national) basis, and there is (or was) some sort of regulatory mechanism in place to prevent any company (including a broadcasting network) from owning stations in every market in the country. ''Philadelphia City Paper'' was an alternative weekly newspaper in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The independently owned paper was free and published every Thursday in print and daily online at citypaper.net. Staff reporters focused on labor issues, politics, education and poverty. Critics reviewed the city's arts, entertainment, literary and restaurant scene. Listings of concerts, art exhibits, dance performances and other events were carried in the paper and in a comprehensive online events calendar. The publication was established in November 1981 as a spinoff of the now-defunct WXPN Express newsletter. The Catholic Standard & Times
''The Catholic Standard & Times,'' published from 1895 to 2012, was the official newspaper of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia. It was the product of the merger of two earlier Catholic newspapers of Philadelphia. The ''Catholic Standard,'' the official organ of the Diocese of Philadelphia, was published by Wm. Pepper & Co. from January 6, 1866, to November 30, 1895. The ''Catholic Times'' ran from December 3, 1892, to November 23, 1895. ''The Catholic Standard & Times'' published its first issue on December 7, 1895. Until its last few years, it published 50 times per year, except the week of July 4 and the last week of the year. It won numerous press awards from the Philadelphia Press Association and the Catholic Press Association and was a member of the latter. The ''Philadelphia Bulletin'' was a daily evening newspaper published from 1847 to 1982 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the largest circulation newspaper in Philadelphia for 76 years and was once the largest evening newspaper in the United States. ''The Jewish Exponent'' is a weekly community newspaper in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the second-oldest continuously published Jewish newspaper in the United States. History ''The Jewish Exponent'' has been published continuously since April 15, 1887. A predecessor newspaper, ''The Jewish Record,'' had been published since 1875. The paper was founded by 43 prominent Philadelphians—among them Henry Samuel Morais—who pledged that it would be "devoted to the interests of the Jewish people." It was an early supporter of Zionism. In the 1940s, the paper experienced financial difficulties, and on May 5, 1944, it was purchased by real estate magnate Albert M. Greenfield and turned over to the Allied Jewish Appeal, a precursor of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, which still publishes it today via the Jewish Publishing Group.
