Carroll Publishing Company is a 501(c)(3) corporation owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. and tasked with publishing the two official weekly newspapers of the archdiocese, the '' Catholic Standard'' and, in Spanish, '' El Pregonero''. History The company was formed and incorporated in 1954, three years after the ''Catholic Standard'' was first published. Under the direction of the late Cardinal James A. Hickey, archbishop of Washington, Carroll assumed control of ''El Pregonero'' in 1985, eight years after it was first published by the archdiocese's Spanish Catholic Center. The company is controlled by a corporate board of directors chaired by the archbishop of Washington, currently the Most Rev. Donald W. Wuerl. Wilton Daniel Gregory Jr. (born December 7, 1947) is an Catholic Church in the United States, American Catholic prelate who served as Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, archbishop of Washington from 2019 to 2025. ''El Pregonero'' is the official Spanish-language newspaper of the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., published by the Carroll Publishing Company. It was first published in 1977 by the Spanish Catholic Center, making it the oldest Spanish-language newspaper published in the capital city of the United States. ''El Pregonero'' provides a Catholic perspective on the issues and trends affecting the Hispanic immigrant community residing in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.
