Malta Music Awards
Malta Music Awards (MMA) is an annual music awards ceremony held since October 20, 1995 and organised by Mega Music Malta in collaboration with Public Broadcasting Services and Magic Malta. The aims of the Malta Music Awards include promotion of local artists and awarding their achievements during the previous year, honouring artists for their contributions towards local music throughout their life-long careers, encouraging new talent, promoting of Maltese music, helping artists to better their standards, honouring Maltese artists for achieving international success, supporting local talent generally, showcasing local talent to help its growth and achieving international success, and increasing the public's interest in the local music industry. Malta ( , , ), officially the Republic of Malta ( mt, Repubblika ta' Malta ), is an island country in the Mediterranean Sea. Kevin Borg
Kevin James Borg (born 9 June 1986, in Floriana, Malta), is a Maltese pop singer who lives and works in Sweden. Borg rose to fame as the winner of the fifth series of the Swedish television singing competition ''Idol'' in 2008. He was the third male winner and the first in the show's history to be born outside of Sweden, having moved there exactly one year before he was declared winner. Malta Fairs & Conventions Centre
The Malta Fairs & Conventions Centre (also known as MFCC) is a multi-purpose venue located in Ta' Qali, Attard, Malta. The centre can be used for concerts, exhibitions, trade fairs, examinations, conferences, galas and weddings. After its expansion in 2018, the venue measures 170m x 50m, totalling 8,500m². The venue can hold up to 14,000 people standing and 10,268 people seated, making it Malta's largest indoor venue. History The venue was established in December 2006 on part of the former Royal Air Force base at Ta Kali which closed in 1968. It has since become the most successful venue in Malta. Joseph Calleja
Joseph Calleja (born January 22, 1978) is a Maltese operatic tenor. Early life and career Calleja was born in Attard, Malta. He began singing at the age of 16, having been discovered by tenor Brian Cefai and continued his studies with Maltese tenor Paul Asciak. He attended De La Salle College. At the age of 19 he made his operatic debut as Macduff in Verdi's '' Macbeth'' at the Astra Theatre in Gozo and went on to become a prize winner at the Belvedere Hans Gabor Competition the same year. In 1998 he won the Caruso Competition in Milan and was a prize winner in Plácido Domingo's Operalia in 1999. On November 2, 2012, the University of Malta presented Calleja with a Doctor of Literature Honoris Causa in acknowledgment of his achievements as an internationally renowned tenor. Hooligan (rapper)
Johnston Farrugia (born 23 September 1980), better known by his stage names Hooligan or Hooli, is a Maltese rapper. He is known for being a pioneer in hip hop music in the Maltese language. Life Hooligan was born on 23 September 1980. When he was 13 years old, he became a fan of Snoop Dogg. At the age of 19, he moved from his hometown Qrendi to Żurrieq. Hooli's career began in 2002, when he worked on the opening theme song of a Smash Television show. In February 2003, he released his debut album ''Oriġinali Bħali'', and it was a hit in Malta. After this success, he performed in many musical events in Malta and Gozo. In summer 2004, he released the single ''Nieħdu Buzz'', which was followed by his second album ''Hooliġinali'' in 2006. Etnika
Etnika is one of Malta's leading modern folk bands founded in 2000. The four founder members were composer Ruben Żahra, traditional instrument maker Ġużi Gatt, researcher Steve Borġ and musician Andrew Alamango. Their main task was to present a revival of old traditional Maltese instruments, at times, with a fusion with contemporary ones. In 2000 Etnika released their first album, entitled ''Nafra''. Their second album, '' Żifna'' (Dance), was released in 2003; it depicts the sentiment of the island nation with its cross cultural Mediterranean influences. Their efforts were rewarded by the Award of Music Achievement in the 2001 Malta Music Awards, held in Ta'Qali. Glen Vella
Glen Vella (born 14 May 1983) is a Maltese singer. He started his singing career at the age of 13. He studied both practical and theory in voice and piano. He is certificated in voice coaching from the Victoria Music and Arts College London. Glen is a residential singer on various TV-shows on the island including 'Kalamita', 'Showtime', 'Sa 6' and 'Sibtijiet Flimkien'. Miriam Gauci
Miriam Gauci (born 3 April 1957) is a Malta, Maltese operatic soprano, particularly associated with lyric Italian roles. Life and career Born in Malta, where she began her voice training, she completed her studies in the ''Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi'' of Milan, Italy. After winning a few international prizes, she made her professional debut in Bologna in Francis Poulenc's ''La voix humaine'', in 1984. Her well-managed voice, unified from top to bottom, of moderate volume and fine quality, fitted her well for the lyric Italian repertory and she was soon in demand throughout Europe. She made her La Scala debut in 1985, in the role of Proserpina in the first modern revival of Luigi Rossi's ''Orfeo''.
