Märt-Matis Lill
Märt-Matis Lill (born 6 November 1975) is an Estonian composer. Märt-Matis Lill was born in Tartu, the son of writer, translator, cultural critic and philosopher Jaan Kaplinski and classical philologist and translator Anne Lill. Guitarist and violinist Emil Lansoo was his grandfather. He studied composition at the Tallinn Music High School under Lepo Sumera. In 1999 he graduated from Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. He has been the artistic director of the Pärnu New Music Days Festival. Tartu
Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia after Tallinn. Tartu has a population of 97,759 (as of 2024). It is southeast of Tallinn and 245 kilometres (152 miles) northeast of Riga, Latvia. Jaan Kaplinski
Jaan Kaplinski (22 January 1941 – 8 August 2021 ) was an Estonian poet, philosopher, politician, and culture critic, known for his focus on global issues and support for left-wing/ liberal thinking. He was influenced by Eastern philosophical schools (Taoism and especially Buddhism). He worked as a translator, editor, and sociologist and as an ecologist at the Tallinn Botanic Garden. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Early life and education Kaplinski was born 22 January 1941 in Tartu to Polish teacher and Estonian dancer Nora Raudsepp-Kaplinski. Anne Lill
Anne Lill (née Laansoo; born 15 October 1946) is an Estonian classical philologist and translator. She is Professor Emeritus at the University of Tartu. Education Anne Laansoo was born on 15 October 1946. She graduated from University of Tartu in 1970. From 1976 to 1978 she was a postgraduate student at Leningrad State University. In 1987 she defended her doctoral thesis at the University of Tartu with research entitled: "The foreign elements in terms of medical terminology in shaping Estonian 1869-1914". This work examined the issues around the transfer of the Latin and Ancient Greek prefix and suffix systems from classical to other languages. Career Lill started working at Tartu State University in 1978. She was first a lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages, then from 1989 to 1992 she was an associate professor. Tallinn Music High School
Tallinn Music High School () was a special music high school in Tallinn, Estonia. History TMHS was founded in 1961 to ensure a sufficient number of quality applicants to the Tallinn State Conservatory (now Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre). It did fulfill its goal successfully, as 80–100% of graduates continued their studies at EAMT or at other music academies abroad. TMHS was the only school in Estonia that provided a professional music education alongside the general primary and secondary curriculum. This system prepared students for a career in music or in any other field. There were 38 senior teachers and 23 teachers on staff with qualifications to teach at the university level. Lepo Sumera
Lepo Sumera (8 May 1950 – 2 June 2000) was an Estonian composer and teacher. Life and career He was born in Tallinn and studied with Veljo Tormis in his teens, and from 1968, with Heino Eller at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (then Tallinn State Conservatory). After Heino Eller's death in 1970, he studied with Heino Jürisalu, graduating in 1973. He then did Postgraduate education, postgraduate study at the Moscow Conservatory (1979–1982) with the Russian composer Roman Ledenev. Sumera first came to notice in 1972 with ''In Memoriam'', an orchestral tribute to Eller. Legacy He is considered one of Estonia's most renowned composers along with Heino Eller, Eduard Tubin and Arvo Pärt. Estonian Academy Of Music And Theatre
The Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (''Eesti Muusika- ja Teatriakadeemia'') began as a mixed choir of the Estonia Society Musical Department (EMD) on the eve of World War I. The assembly of the Estonia Society created the Tallinn Higher Music School on November 17, 1918. The opening ceremony took place on September 28, 1919. In 1923 the educational institution was renamed the Tallinn Conservatoire. In 1938 the State Drama School was opened. In 1993 the school was renamed the Estonian Academy of Music. Estonian Composers' Union (abbreviation ECU; ) is an Estonian creative union which encompasses professional composers and musicologists in Estonia. The chairman of ECU is Märt-Matis Lill. Since 2005, ECU is a member of the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM). As of 2021, ECU has 120 members.
