''Myxococcus '' is a gram-negative, rod-shaped species of myxobacteria found in soil. It is a predator on other bacteria. The ends of the rod-shaped vegetative cells taper slightly. The colonies are pale brown and show swarming motility. It produces orange, roughly spherical fruiting bodies. A draft sequence of its genome showed significant differences from all previously known species of the genus '' Myxococcus''. It was isolated from soil collected near the settlement of , on the island of Anglesey in North Wales, and was named after this location. The scientific name of this bacterial species is considered the longest name in the binomial nomenclature system, bearing 73 characters in total. Despite this, it is not yet acknowledged by the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (IJSEM), and therefore is not considered to be valid. Myxobacteria
The myxobacteria ("slime bacteria") are a group of bacteria that predominantly live in the soil and feed on insoluble organic substances. The myxobacteria have very large genomes relative to other bacteria, e.g. 9–10 million nucleotides except for '' Anaeromyxobacter'' and ''Vulgatibacter''. One species of myxobacteria, ''Minicystis rosea'', has the largest known bacterial genome with over 16 million nucleotides. The second largest is another myxobacteria ''Sorangium cellulosum''. Swarming Motility
Swarming motility is a rapid (2–10 μm/s) and coordinated translocation of a bacterial population across solid or semi-solid surfaces, and is an example of bacterial multicellularity and swarm behaviour. ''Myxococcus'' is a genus of bacteria in the family Myxococcaceae. Myxococci are Gram-negative, spore-forming, chemoorganotrophic, obligate aerobes. They are elongated rods with rounded or tapered ends, and they are nonflagellated. The cells move by gliding and can predate other bacteria. The genus has been isolated from soil. At least eleven species had been identified with confidence by late 2020 and each had been characterised to some extent.
