My Queenstown Heritage Trail
My Queenstown Heritage Trail is a walking trail in Queenstown, Singapore. The trail was launched in 2010 by civic group, My Community, to promote the heritage, local culture and architectural styles in Queenstown . Queenstown was named after Queen Elizabeth II to mark her coronation in 1952. Conceived by the Singapore Improvement Trust in the 1950s and completed by its predecessor, Housing and Development Board ( HDB), in the 1960s, Queenstown is Singapore's first satellite town and serves as the testbed for Singapore's public housing programme. At present, the trail consists of 40 historical sites, including Alexandra Hospital (former British Military Hospital), Ying Fo Fui Kun cemetery and ancestral hall, Hang Jebat Mosque, Queensway Shopping Centre, Princess House, Church of the Blessed Sacrament and Singapore's first HDB flats, sports complex, polyclinic, branch library, neighbourhood police centre and technical school. Commonwealth Avenue Wet Market
Commonwealth Avenue Wet Market, also known as Queenstown Market, is a former wet market on Commonwealth Avenue in Queenstown, Singapore. It is the only remaining market designed by the Singapore Improvement Trust. Description It was one of the first covered market and food centre, the roof of the former wet market is bold and parabolic-vaulted that allows rainwater to drain quickly. The façade of the former wet market, which resembles a traditional Chinese coffin, caused the market to earn the nickname of "the Coffin Market". A honeycomb screen wall, which can be found on the former wet market's ground floor, keeps the interior of the building ventilated. Katong
Katong, also known as Tanjong Katong, is a residential neighbourhood in the eastern portion of the Central Region of Singapore, within the Marine Parade planning area. It used to be located by the sea, before land reclamation towards the south to East Coast Park was created for housing and recreational purposes beginning in the 1960s to 1970s. Katong was the location of many villas and mansions of the wealthy elite in the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries. Golden Mile Complex () is a high-rise commercial and residential building on Beach Road in Kallang, Singapore, within walking distance to Nicoll Highway MRT station. Queenstown Public Library
Queenstown Public Library is one of the 26 public libraries established by the National Library Board of Singapore. It was the first full-time Branch Library to be built by the National Library in its plan to decentralise home reading services. It pioneered several firsts amongst Branch Libraries, including becoming the first fully air-conditioned Branch in 1978, computerising its loan services in 1987, and lending video cassettes in 1997. It was refurbished in 2003. The building plans were approved by Mrs Hedwig Anuar, the then-Director of the National Library. Home Ownership Scheme
The Home Ownership Scheme (HOS) is a subsidised-sale public housing programme managed by the Hong Kong Housing Authority. It was instituted in the late 1970s as part of the government policy for public housing with two aims – to encourage better-off tenants of rental flats to vacate those flats for re-allocation to families in greater housing need; and also to provide an opportunity for home ownership to families unable to afford to buy in the private sector. Under the scheme, the government sells flats to eligible public housing tenants and to lower-income residents at prices below the market level, with discounts usually between 30 and 40 per cent.
