Mundus (general)
Mundus or Mundo ( el, Μοῦνδος; Moundos, la, Mundo; died 536) was a Barbarian commander of Gepid, Hun, and/or Gothic origins. He appears to have been the son of the Gepid king Giesmus. In the early 500s he commanded a group of bandits in Pannonia, eventually allying himself to the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great. After Theodoric's death in 526, Mundus entered Byzantine service under emperor Justinian I, fighting in the Balkans, defending Justinian during the Nika riots, and fighting in the first stage of the Gothic War, during which he died in 536. Etymology Mundus's name is attested as la, Mundo in Jordanes and Marcellinus Comes and as gr, Μοῦνδος (Mundus) in Greek sources. The differences between the Greek and Latin names are unusual and Gerhard Doerfer suspects that the Greek name has been partially Hellenized. Frank Mundus
Frank Mundus (October 21, 1925September 10, 2008) was a fisherman and charter captain based in Montauk, New York who is said to be the inspiration for the character Quint in the book and movie '' Jaws''. He started out as a shark hunter but later became a shark conservationist. Up until his death, he chartered out his boat ''Cricket II'' for those seeking the thrill of big game fishing. Mundus' early techniques, which included killing whales merely for chum and harpooning sharks (practices which are outlawed today), earned him criticism even at the time. In the last few years of his life Mundus had campaigned for shark fishermen to catch and release their prey, even going as far as to publish a conservation book titled ''White Shark Sam Meets The Monster Man.'' Mundus died on September 10, 2008, in Honolulu due to complications from a heart attack he suffered on September 6, the day he returned home to Hawaii after spending the summer in Montauk. Saint Munde
Saint Munde (or Mundus, Mund, Mond; died ) was a Scottish abbot in Argyll, Scotland. There is some confusion between this saint and the much earlier Saint Fintan Munnu. His feast day is 15 April. Eilean Munde and Fintan Munnu On July 6, 1770, Bishop Robert Forbes sailed up Loch Leven. He records: "We likewise come in view of the Island of St. Munde, who was Abbot and Confessor in Argyll…Upon this island is the ruin of a little chapel, all the four walls of which are still entire, dedicated to the same St. Munde." Samuel Lewis in his ''Topographical Dictionary of Scotland'' says that the parish of Elean-Munde was so-called from St. Munde, who was an abbot in Argyll in the 10th century. Another source says that Eilean Munde, and four Kilmuns in Argyll, are said to be named after the Irish saint sometimes called Fintan Munnu in Scotland, but notes that this is by no means certain. Heis ( so, Xiis, ) is a historic coastal town located in the Sanaag region of Somaliland. The town was important for trade and communication with the Somali interior and was used to export frankincense to Arabia. History Antiquity The site said to be identical with the ancient trading post of Mundus ( grc, Μούνδος) that is described in the ''Periplus of the Erythraean Sea'', an anonymous account by a Greek Alexandrian salesman from the 1st century CE. A large collection of cairns of various types lie near the city. Excavations here have yielded pottery and sherds of Roman glassware from a time between the 1st and 5th centuries. Among these artefacts is high-quality millefiori glass. Dated to 0-40 CE, it features red flower disks superimposed on a green background. Mundus Furniture
Mundus was the name of a furniture-manufacturing company, active (at least) in several places in the Austria-Hungary, Austro-Hungarian Empire, at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century. Factories seem to have existed in multiple locations, as the products carry diverse labels, such as "Budapest", "Borlova", "Czechoslovakia", etc. Some of the furniture was co-signed with "Jacob and Josef Kohn".
