Multatuli Museum (Netherlands)
The Multatuli Museum (also Multatuli House/Huis) is a 17th-century museum in the Jordaan neighbourhood of Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is dedicated to Eduard Douwes Dekker (1820-1887), whose pen name was Multatuli. Multatuli is best known for his 1860 novel Max Havelaar, inspired by time spent in Indonesia while serving in the Dutch civil service. Eduard Douwes Dekker was born in the Multatuli House and he died 67 years later in Ingelheim am Rhein, Germany on a red sofa that can be seen here to date. In 2013, the Multatuli House had 1176 visitors. The museum organises regular temporary exhibitions about the writer as well as lectures, symposia and themed guided walks through Amsterdam. In 2018, another (unaffiliated) Multatuli Museum has also opened in Rangkasbitung, Indonesia. Collection At the Multatuli House, one can see how Multatuli would have lived in the 19th century; his personal belongings still decorate the house. Rangkasbitung (Sundanese: ) (colloquially called Rangkas) is a town which is the administrative centre of Lebak Regency, in Banten Province of Java, Indonesia. It had a population of 134,945 at the 2020 Census, while the official estimate as at mid 2021 was 137,041. It is the site of the Multatuli Museum, a history museum which opened in 2018. The Multatuli Museum ( id, Museum Multatuli) is a museum located in Rangkasbitung, Banten, Indonesia. Its focus is the author Multatuli (Edward Douwes Dekker), who lived in the area in the 1850s and used it as the basis for his famous anti-colonial novel ''Max Havelaar''. The museum also examines Dutch East Indies colonial history, the anti-colonial movement, and the local history of Rangkasbitung. There is another Multatuli Museum in Amsterdam which houses many of the author's personal papers. Ingelheim (), officially Ingelheim am Rhein ( en, Ingelheim upon Rhine), is a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in the Rhineland-Palatinate state of Germany. ''Max Havelaar; or, The Coffee Auctions of the Dutch Trading Company'' ( nl, Max Havelaar; of, De koffi-veilingen der Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappy) is an 1860 novel by Multatuli (the pen name of Eduard Douwes Dekker), which played a key role in shaping and modifying Dutch colonial policy in the Dutch East Indies in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Jordaan
The Jordaan is a neighbourhood of the city of Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is part of the borough of Amsterdam-Centrum. The area is bordered by the Singelgracht canal and the neighbourhood of Frederik Hendrikbuurt to the west; the Prinsengracht to the east; the Brouwersgracht to the north and the Leidsegracht to the south. The former canal Rozengracht (now filled in) is the main traffic artery through the neighbourhood.
