The Shire of Mornington Peninsula is a local government area in southeastern Metropolitan Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is located to the south of the Melbourne City Centre. It has an area of 724 square kilometres and in June 2018 it had a population of 165,822. History The Mornington Peninsula Shire came into existence on 15 December 1994 when the state government amalgamated the previous Shires of Flinders, Hastings and Mornington. On August 13, 2019, the Shire voted to declare a climate emergency in response to other similar declarations from councils around Australia. The Shire abolished the 150-year-old tradition of reciting a prayer before Council meetings in December 2020. The Shire of Mornington was a local government area about south of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia, encompassing the western extremity of the Mornington Peninsula. The shire covered an area of immediately to the south of Frankston, and existed from 1860 until 1994. History The Mount Eliza Road District (centred on Frankston) was created on 6 November 1860, and became a shire on 24 November 1871. On 31 May 1893, it was renamed the Shire of Frankston and Hastings, while its western riding was severed and named New Mornington, to avoid confusion with the previous entity. Dromana is a seaside suburb on the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, south of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Mornington Peninsula local government area. Crib Point, Victoria
Crib Point is a town on the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Mornington Peninsula local government area. Crib Point recorded a population of 3,343 at the 2021 census. The town is part of an urban enclave on Western Port comprising Bittern, Crib Point, Hastings, Tyabb, and Somerville. Cape Schanck, Victoria
Cape Schanck is a locality at the southernmost tip of the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, approximately south of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Mornington Peninsula local government area. Cape Schanck recorded a population of 569 at the 2021 census. Cape Schanck separates the wild ocean waters of Bass Strait from the slightly calmer waters of Western Port. Baxter, Victoria
Baxter is a township and rural locality beyond the Urban Growth Boundary in Victoria, Australia, south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Mornington Peninsula local government area. Baxter recorded a population of 2,166 at the 2021 census. It is served by Baxter railway station on the Stony Point greater-metropolitan line. Originally named Baxter's Flat, Baxter was founded by pastoralist Benjamin Baxter, who lived in a property named ''Carrup Carrup'' - the Aboriginal name. The property still exists today on what is now the Frankston-Flinders Road, as does the original cottage he and his wife Martha lived in. Balnarring Beach is a town on the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, south of Balnarring and approximately south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Mornington Peninsula local government area. Balnarring is a town in the south-eastern extremity of the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, approximately south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Mornington Peninsula local government area.
