Interprovincial Rugby Football Union
The East Division is one of the two regional divisions of the Canadian Football League, its counterpart being the West Division. Although the CFL was not founded until 1958, the East Division and its clubs are descended from earlier leagues. The four teams in the division are the Toronto Argonauts, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Montreal Alouettes, and Ottawa Redblacks. Several now-defunct teams have also played in the East Division including two teams from the United States and a large number of teams that have played in Hamilton, Montreal, and Ottawa prior to the current teams from those cities. Abe Eliowitz
Abe Eliowitz (November 10, 1910 – November 19, 1981) was a star football player in American college football and in the days before the Canadian Football League. He also played college baseball. Early life and education Eliowitz attended Michigan State University from 1930 to 1932. In 1931, Eliowitz was named an All America all-star honorable mention, and received the first MVP (Governor of Michigan) award ever given by Michigan State, and the Spartans finished with a record of 5–3–1. In 1932, Abe was co-captain and was named Grantland Rice All America honorable mention as MSU had its best season during his career, compiling a record of 7–1–0. An all-around athlete, Eliowitz played on the baseball team and is sixth all-time in school history in triples in a season with six (1931), and triples in a career with 10. John Ferraro (Canadian Football)
John James Ferraro (1910 – September 28, 1981) was American gridiron football player. He was an all-star football player in the Ontario Rugby Football Union and the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1966 and the Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978. A graduate of Cornell University in 1934 with a degree in hotel administration, he captained both the football and basketball teams and was a member of the Quill and Dagger society. He came to Canada in 1934 and played two seasons with the Hamilton Tigers of the IRFU and played in the Grey Cup. Ferraro then moved to Montreal where he played for 4 teams. Starting in 1936, he suited up for the Montreal Indians, Montreal Nationals, Montreal Westmounts and Montreal Bulldogs. He was also playing coach of the Tigers and Indians. Canadian Football News in 1936 Teams were restricted to a maximum of five imports, and only players who had lived in Canada for a full year could compete in the Grey Cup game. When Regina won the West, five of their imports were declared illegal by the Canadian Rugby Union (CRU). Regina offered to drop the players for the Grey Cup, but the CRU would not allow them to play for the cup. Instead, the Grey Cup was a contest between the Sarnia Imperials of the Ontario Rugby Football Union (ORFU) and the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union (IRFU). Sarnia won their second and last Grey Cup with a powerful line-up that included future Hall of Famers Hugh (Bummer) Stirling and Ormond Beach.
