Mobil (horse)
Mobil (foaled 2000 in Ontario) is a retired Canadian Thoroughbred racehorse. At age two, he won the two top races for his age group, the Cup and Saucer Stakes and the Coronation Futurity Stakes. However, in the Futurity he dead heated with Arco's Gold for the win but was subsequently disqualified for interference and set back to second. A top three-year-old, Mobil ran second to Canadian Triple Crown winner Wando (his half brother, both by Langfuhr), in the Queen's Plate. His performances in 2004 earned him the Sovereign Award as Canada's Champion Older Male Horse. Mobil was retired after the 2005 racing season having won twelve of his twenty-nine starts and having earned $1.877 million. Langfuhr (horse)
Langfuhr (1992 – October 2023) was a Canadian Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Owned and bred by noted German-born Canadian horseman Gus Schickedanz, he was named for Langfuhr the former German name for one of the boroughs of the Northern Polish city of Danzig. Langfuhr's sire Danzig was named after that city. Racing career Langfuhr raced in Canada and the United States where he won three Grade 1 races. However, he is better known as the sire of a number of accomplished racehorses. In 1996, Langfuhr's wins included the American Grade II Forego Handicap at Saratoga Race Course and the Grade I Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park. His performances that year earned him Canadian Champion Sprint Horse honors. After winning the 1997 Carter Handicap at Aqueduct Racetrack in April and May's Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park, an injury ended Langfuhr's racing career and he was retired to stud. Windfields Farm
Windfields Farm was a six square kilometre (1,500 acre) Thoroughbred horse breeding farm that was founded by businessman E. P. Taylor in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Origin The first stable and breeding operation of E. P. Taylor originated with a property north of the city of Toronto on Bayview Avenue. Taylor then acquired the Parkwood Stable in Oshawa when it was offered for sale in 1950 by Colonel Sam McLaughlin (of McLaughlin Motor Car Company fame), and he named his new purchase the National Stud Farm. In 1969, the name was changed to Windfields Farm Limited, Oshawa Division. As population growth overtook the operation, it eventually expanded to include a second farm, Windfields Farm (Maryland) in Chesapeake City, Maryland, United States. A stud animal is a registered animal retained for breeding. The terms for the male of a given animal species (stallion, bull, rooster, etc.) usually imply that the animal is intact—that is, not castrated—and therefore capable of siring offspring. A specialized vocabulary exists for de-sexed animals (gelding, steer, etc.) and those animals used in grading up to a purebred status. Queen's Plate
The King's Plate (known as the Queen's Plate between 1860 to 1901 and 1952 to 2022) is Canada's oldest Thoroughbred horse race, having been founded in 1860. It is also the oldest continuously run race in North America. It is run at a distance of for a maximum of 17 three-year-old Thoroughbred horses foaled in Canada. The race takes place each summer at Woodbine Racetrack in Etobicoke, Ontario. It is the first race in the Canadian Triple Crown. The King's Plate has typically been held in June or July, but in 2020 the race was postponed to September due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. Woodbine then elected to run the 2021 and 2022 editions of the race in August. Historically, the race has been named in honour of the reigning monarch. Wando (horse)
Wando (February 23, 2000 – January 22, 2014) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who won the Canadian Triple Crown in 2003. Wando was bred by Gustav Schickedanz at his farm Schomberg Farms in Schomberg, Ontario and ridden mainly by jockey Patrick Husbands. The chestnut stallion raced with moderate success as a four-year-old, and was then retired on 12 May 2005 to stand at stud at Lane's End Farm near Lexington, Kentucky. In 2011, the stallion returned to Schomberg, where he died of a heart attack on January 22, 2014. He is buried at Schomberg Farms.
