Langfuhr (horse)
Langfuhr (1992 – October 2023) was a Canadian Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Owned and bred by noted German-born Canadian horseman Gus Schickedanz, he was named for Langfuhr the former German name for one of the boroughs of the Northern Polish city of Danzig. Langfuhr's sire Danzig was named after that city. Racing career Langfuhr raced in Canada and the United States where he won three Grade 1 races. However, he is better known as the sire of a number of accomplished racehorses. In 1996, Langfuhr's wins included the American Grade II Forego Handicap at Saratoga Race Course and the Grade I Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park. His performances that year earned him Canadian Champion Sprint Horse honors. After winning the 1997 Carter Handicap at Aqueduct Racetrack in April and May's Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park, an injury ended Langfuhr's racing career and he was retired to stud. Danzig (horse)
Danzig (February 12, 1977 – January 4, 2006) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who is best known as a leading sire. He was purchased for $310,000 (equivalent to $ million in ) by Henryk de Kwiatkowski at the 1978 Saratoga Yearling Sale. The son of Hall of Famer Northern Dancer and the most commercially successful sire of the second half of the 20th century, he won all three of his races before knee problems ended his racing career. Stud record Danzig was retired to stand at stud at Claiborne Farm near Paris, Kentucky, where he became one of the world's most important sires. He led the U.S. sires list from 1991 to 1993 and topped the sire list in Spain and the United Arab Emirates. Danzig sired 188 graded stakes race winners and 10 champions. Mobil (horse)
Mobil (foaled 2000 in Ontario) is a retired Canadian Thoroughbred racehorse. At age two, he won the two top races for his age group, the Cup and Saucer Stakes and the Coronation Futurity Stakes. However, in the Futurity he dead heated with Arco's Gold for the win but was subsequently disqualified for interference and set back to second. A top three-year-old, Mobil ran second to Canadian Triple Crown winner Wando (his half brother, both by Langfuhr), in the Queen's Plate. His performances in 2004 earned him the Sovereign Award as Canada's Champion Older Male Horse. Mobil was retired after the 2005 racing season having won twelve of his twenty-nine starts and having earned $1.877 million. Canadian Horse Of The Year
The Canadian Horse of the Year is a thoroughbred horse racing honour given annually since 1951 by the Jockey Club of Canada. It is the most prestigious honour in Canadian thoroughbred horse racing. Part of the Sovereign Awards program since 1975, it is similar to the Eclipse Award for American Horse of the Year honours given in the United States. The original eligibility rules stipulated that the winner be a Canadian-bred horse that did its "best running" in Canada. In 1964, the rule was altered for Northern Dancer, who was a Canadian-bred but whose most notable wins came in the United States when he won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Eventually the requirement that the horse be a Canadian-bred was also dropped. The current rules simply require that the horse have raced at least three times in Canada during the given year (two times for two-year-olds). Wando (horse)
Wando (February 23, 2000 – January 22, 2014) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who won the Canadian Triple Crown in 2003. Wando was bred by Gustav Schickedanz at his farm Schomberg Farms in Schomberg, Ontario and ridden mainly by jockey Patrick Husbands. The chestnut stallion raced with moderate success as a four-year-old, and was then retired on 12 May 2005 to stand at stud at Lane's End Farm near Lexington, Kentucky. In 2011, the stallion returned to Schomberg, where he died of a heart attack on January 22, 2014. He is buried at Schomberg Farms. A stud animal is a registered animal retained for breeding. The terms for the male of a given animal species (stallion, bull, rooster, etc.) usually imply that the animal is intact—that is, not castrated—and therefore capable of siring offspring. Aqueduct Racetrack is a Thoroughbred horse racing facility and casino in the South Ozone Park, Queens, South Ozone Park and Jamaica, Queens, Jamaica neighborhoods of Queens, New York City, United States. Belmont Park
Belmont Park is a major thoroughbred horse racing facility in the northeastern United States, located in Elmont, New York, just east of the New York City limits. It was opened on May 4, 1905. It is operated by the non-profit New York Racing Association, as are the Aqueduct Racetrack and Saratoga Race Course.
