Mitchell School
Mitchell School is a public school in Mitchell in the U.S. state of Oregon with an enrollment of about 70 students. The K–12 school is the only school in the Mitchell School District, which covers sections of Wheeler County, including Mitchell. Mitchell School operates a boarding residence for up to 20 students in grades 9 through 12. The dormitory opened midway in the 1990s. In 2020 the dormitory had 12 students. These students come from all over the world as well as all over Oregon. During the 2013–2014 school year, they included students from Thailand, Hong Kong, Germany, Mexico and Spain. Academics In 2008, 100 percent of the school's seniors received their high school diploma. Of 2 students, 2 graduated and 0 dropped out. Mitchell is a city in Wheeler County, Oregon, United States. The population was 130 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1873 and was named after John H. Mitchell, a politician. The Painted Hills unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is about northwest of Mitchell. Mitchell School, a public school with an enrollment of about 70 students, is in Mitchell. History Foundation At the request of William "Brawdie" Johnson, a blacksmith, a post office was established at Mitchell in 1873. Johnson, the first postmaster, suggested the name ''Mitchell'' after John Hipple Mitchell, a U.S. Senator from Oregon. Senator Mitchell held the office in 1873−1879, 1885−1897, and 1901−1905. Wheeler County is a county in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,451, making it Oregon's least populous county. It is named in honor of , an early settler who owned a farm near Mitchell. The county seat is Fossil, and Wheeler County is known for having Oregon's largest deposit of fossils.
