Mies Callenfels-Carsten
Mies Callenfels-Carsten (1893-1982) was a Dutch painter. Biography Callenfels-Carsten was born on 3 September 1893 in Roermond. She studied at the ''Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten'' ( Royal Academy of Art, The Hague). Her instructors included David Bautz, and . Callenfels-Carsten was married twice. Her first husband was dr. J.N. Voorstad MD (1884-1960). Her second husband was vice-admiral J. Callenfels (1896-1961). Callenfels-Carsten was a member of the Pulchri Studio, the Haagse Kunstkring, (The Hague Art Circle), the Kunst zij ons doel ("Art be our aim"), and the ''Bataviasche Kunstkring'' (the Bataviasche Art Circle). Roermond (; li, Remunj or ) is a city, municipality, and diocese in the Limburg province of the Netherlands. The Royal Academy of Art (KABK, nl, Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten) is an art and design academy in The Hague. Pulchri Studio (Latin:"For the study of beauty") is a Dutch art society, art institution and art studio based in The Hague ('s-Gravenhage), Netherlands. This institute began in 1847 at the home of painter Lambertus Hardenberg. Since 1893 the club has its residence in the villa at Lange Voorhout in The Hague. Membership is made up of painters, sculptors, photographers and art lovers, with members selected by a committee. Kunst zij ons doel, or KZOD, (English: ''Art be our aim'') is the name of an artists club in the Waag, Haarlem. History The Society was founded in 1821 as the continuation of the ' Haarlemse Teekenacademie', established in 1772 by Cornelis van Noorde, Tako Hajo Jelgersma, Hendrik de Meijer, Christiaan Henning, Leendert Overbeek and Paul van Liender in the fundatiehuis set up by Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, who was one of the directors. After Teyler died they moved to the Warmoesstraat around the corner. That society was started as a drawing academy that was connected to the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke. The drawing academy ran into financial difficulties when the guilds were disbanded in 1794. It died entirely when its most fervent leader, Cornelis van Noorde, died in 1795. Onze Kunst van Heden (Contemporary Artists/Our Art of Today) was an exhibition held in the winter of 1939 through 1940 at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Due to the threat of invasion in the years leading up to World War II, the Netherlands' government stored many items from the Rijksmuseum's permanent collection. The resulting empty gallery space was utilized by contemporary Dutch artists to exhibit and sell their art. It was organized by the director of the Rijksmuseum . The show was open to all artists, with each artist allowed to enter four pieces. 902 artists exhibited 3,200 works of art in 74 rooms and cabinets of the Rijksmuseum.
