Michael Leahy (born January 28, 1953) is an American author and award-winning writer for ''The Washington Post'' and '' The Washington Post Magazine''. He is best known for his latest non-fiction book '' The Last Innocents'', which examines the tumultuous political and social change of the 1960s through the lens of the era's legendary Los Angeles Dodgers. Leahy has also earned recognition for his 2004 book '' When Nothing Else Matters'', which chronicles basketball superstar Michael Jordan's last comeback to the NBA. Leahy's stories have also been selected for the 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 editions of The Best American Sports Writing anthologies. His first book '' Hard Lessons'' follows the lives of six Beverly Hills High School students, class of 1986, and deals with the challenges and anxieties of teenage life in modern America. Michael Leahy (politician)
Michael Leahy (1932–2007) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He was the Mayor of Galway from 1983–1984, 1991–1992, and 1997–1998. Born in Ballylanders, County Limerick, Leahy began working for CIÉ in 1952, been transferred to Galway two years later. He contested in the election of 1974 but only became a councillor in 1979, representing the North and East Ward. He first became Mayor in 1983, and so oversaw the Quincentennial celebrations of the city's Mayoral status. With President of Ireland, Patrick Hillery, he formally opened the celebrations with the raising of the coats of arms of The Tribes of Galway at Eyre Square. Eighteen Mayors from Ireland and abroad arrived in February, he conferred the Freedom of Galway twice, and welcome President Ronald Reagan to the city on 2 June 1984. Michael James Leahy OBE (born 7 January 1949) was the General Secretary of the British Trade Union Community. Leahy was General Secretary of the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation (ISTC) from 1999 until it merged with the National Union of Knitwear, Footwear & Apparel Trades (KFAT) in 2004 to form Community. He served as General Secretary until 2013. Early life Leahy was born in Pontypool, Wales, in 1949. He attended Twmpath Secondary Modern School. Michael joined the ISTC in 1965 upon starting work as a Chargehand at Panteg Steel Works, where he was employed from 1965 to 1977. He is married with two children. Michael James Leahy MBE (26 February 1901 – 7 March 1979) was an Australian explorer and gold prospector, famed for his exploration of the Highlands area of Papua New Guinea. He photographed, filmed and published many of his explorations widely. Biography Early life Leahy was born in Toowoomba, Queensland, the fourth of nine children of Irish migrants Daniel Leahy, a railway guard, and his wife Ellen, née Stone. After an education at the Christian Brothers' College in Toowoomba, Leahy initially worked as a railway clerk before leaving to become a freelance timber cutter. He abandoned this in 1926 upon hearing about the Edie Creek gold strike in New Guinea. He was soon followed to New Guinea by his brothers Paddy, Jim and Danny, while another brother, Tom, remained in Toowoomba. Mick Leahy (12 March 1935 – 5 January 2010) was an Irish-born British professional boxer. Born in Cork, he became a British citizen in 1961 and lived the rest of his life in Coventry. In a career which spanned from 1956 to 1965, Leahy won the British Middleweight title and fought such names as László Papp and Nino Benvenuti. Leahy began boxing as an amateur in Cork during the 1950s, where he became the Amateur Irish Lightweight Champion. After moving to Coventry to work in the building trade he was spotted by the manager George Middleton and he turned professional in 1956. Professional career Leahy made his professional debut on 22 October 1956 in Leicester. Michael Leahy (1 March 1895 – 13 April 1950) was an Irish hurler who played as a left corner-forward for the Tipperary and Cork senior teams from 1916 until 1931. Leahy joined the Tipperary team as a substitute during the 1916 championship and lined out at irregular intervals over the course of the following decade. In 1927 Leahy joined the Cork senior hurling team, remaining with 'the Rebels' until 1931. Throughout his long career he won one All-Ireland winner's medal and two Munster winner's medals. Michael Brian Leahy (born 13 July 1966) is a British scientist, environmental campaigner and television presenter, known for his series '' Bite Me'' on the National Geographic Channel. Leahy grew up in Steventon, Oxfordshire, and attended John Mason Comprehensive School in Abingdon. He left school at 15 and worked for ten years as a motor mechanic. He was then a student at both Oxford Brookes University and Oxford University, where he gained a D.Phil in Virology and Molecular Biology. Michael Leahy (born 30 April 1989) is an Irish former professional footballer who played for League of Ireland clubs UCD, Limerick, Sligo Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic. After retiring, he began to work with FIFPRO. Career UCD Leahy started playing football with Belvedere before signing for his local League of Ireland side UCD in 2007, where he played in their underage sides for 2 years. He made his debut in senior football as a 19-year-old, on 6 March 2009 on the opening day of the 2009 League of Ireland First Division season, a 2–1 win over Limerick.
