Michael Leahy (politician)
Michael Leahy (1932–2007) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He was the Mayor of Galway from 1983–1984, 1991–1992, and 1997–1998. Born in Ballylanders, County Limerick, Leahy began working for CIÉ in 1952, been transferred to Galway two years later. He contested in the election of 1974 but only became a councillor in 1979, representing the North and East Ward. He first became Mayor in 1983, and so oversaw the Quincentennial celebrations of the city's Mayoral status. With President of Ireland, Patrick Hillery, he formally opened the celebrations with the raising of the coats of arms of The Tribes of Galway at Eyre Square. Eighteen Mayors from Ireland and abroad arrived in February, he conferred the Freedom of Galway twice, and welcome President Ronald Reagan to the city on 2 June 1984. Ballylanders
Ballylanders () is a village in south County Limerick, Ireland. It is situated on the R513 Mitchelstown-Limerick regional road, being approximately from the former and from the latter. The 2016 census recorded a population of 308 people. Name Historically the name translates as "de Londra's town" and is most likely of Norman origin and referring to a popular Anglo-Norman derived family surname of "Landers" or alternatively "de Londra" can give its translation as "Town of the Londoner". Amenities There is a holy well close to the village which is the focal point of the Pattern day, held annually on 15 August, this is one of the major such fair days in the locality. In 2011 The Wolfe Tones performed in the marquee during the pattern festival. The present-day Catholic parish church is of a modern circular design. The office of Mayor of Galway is an honorific title used by the of Galway City Council. The council has jurisdiction throughout its administrative area of the city of Galway which is the largest city in the province of Connacht, in Ireland. The current mayor is Clodagh Higgins, ( FG). Election to the office The Mayor is elected to office annually by Councillors of Galway City Council from amongst its members. There is no popular vote. Up to 1841, Mayors were elected in August and took office in September. There was a strong tradition of festivities to mark this start of a new municipal year. Current practice is for the term of office to begin in June with the former Mayor presenting the Chain of Office to the incoming Mayor, thus formally inaugurating a new term. Angela Lynch-Lupton
Angela Lynch-Lupton (died 2007) served as Mayor of Galway for two terms in 1989 and 1998. She was the eighty-fourth bearer of the name to serve in that office since Peirce Lynch, elected as the first Mayor, in August 1485. Lynch served two terms as a Fine Gael councillor for the city's west ward. John Mulholland (politician)
John Mulholland (1946 – 12 October 2022) was an Irish politician who was the Mayor of Galway from 1986 to 1987 and again from 1996 to 1997. Life and career Mulholland was born in Dublin in 1946, the eldest of six children of Ned Mulholland of Kinnegad and Betty O'Donoghue of Ballingary, County Tipperary. The family moved to Galway in 1948. In 1968 he married Margaret Flynn of Letterfrack, and moved to London where he worked in a betting office and as a fingerprint officer at Scotland Yard. He returned to Galway to take charge of the family's betting shop. He and Margaret have children Alan, Lisa, Eddie and Aoife Mulholland. Mulholland expanded the business, and by the early 21st century owned ten betting shops. Influenced by Garret FitzGerald, Mulholland stood for Fine Gael and was elected with a large majority for the city's South Ward in 1985, becoming mayor the following year. Pádraic McCormack (born 15 May 1942) is a former Irish Fine Gael politician, who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Galway West constituency from 1989 to 2011, and as a Senator from 1987 to 1989. McCormack is a native of Kenagh, County Longford, and was educated at St. Mel's College, Longford. He was elected to Seanad Éireann in 1987 by the Agricultural Panel and is also a former member of Galway County Council. He was first elected to the Dáil at the 1989 general election and was re-elected at each subsequent election until his retirement in 2011. Mary Byrne (mayor)
Mary Byrne (1917–2004) was the Mayor of Galway from 1975 to 1976 and again from 1984 to 1985. One of two children of Michael Byrne of Newry, County Down, and Brigid Kelly of Garafine, Ballymacward, County Galway, she trained as a nurse in the city's old Central Hospital and later worked as a staff-nurse at Galway Regional Hospital. She eventually became a Sister and worked in the Casualty Department for twenty-two years. She was a member of the Western Health Board from 1970 to 1988 representing General Nurses. She served as Chairperson of the Galway Branch of the Irish Nurses Organisation as well as being a member of its National Executive for many years. Pat McNamara (1938 – 2016) was an Irish politician who served as the mayor of Galway from 1982 to 1983. Background A native of the Claddagh, McNamara worked for Connacth Mineral Company and played with Galway Rovers and Galway Town.
