Michelle Davidson (swimmer)
Michelle Davidson (born 1970), is a U.S. Masters Swimmer and a Long-distance swimming, long distance, open water swimmer. She is one of only 84 swimmers in the world who have ever accomplished the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, which includes crossing the English Channel and Catalina Channel, and circumnavigating Manhattan Island. Swimming Born in 1970, Davidson grew up in the Oakhurst, New Jersey, Oakhurst section of Ocean Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey, and graduated in 1989 from Ocean Township High School, where she was captain of the swimming team. She has been a resident of the Ocean Grove, New Jersey, Ocean Grove section of Neptune Township, New Jersey, and is employed as a teacher at Holmdel High School. Long-distance Swimming
Long-distance swimming is distinguished from ordinary swimming in that the distances involved are longer than are typically swum in pool competitions. When a given swim calls more on endurance than on outright speed, it is the more likely to be considered a long-distance swim. Long-distance swims, however, may take place in pools, such as the 1st official 24 hours World Championship in 1976 won by Peppo Biscarini with a record of 83.7 km (24 hour swims in a 50 m-long pool) or the current 25 meter pool world record of 2008 Olympic gold medalist Maarten van der Weijden. This is a list of notable successful swims across the English Channel, a straight-line distance of about . First attempts After a seaman had floated across the Channel on a bundle of straw, Matthew Webb made the crossing without the aid of artificial buoyancy. His first attempt ended in failure, but on 25 August 1875, he started from Admiralty Pier in Dover and made the crossing in 21 hours and 45 minutes, despite challenging tides (which delayed him for 5 hours) and a jellyfish sting. 80 failed attempts were made by a variety of people before Thomas William Burgess, who on 6 September 1911 became the second person to successfully make the crossing. He crossed from Dover to Cap Gris Nez in 22 hours and 35 minutes at his 16th bid.
