Michael Peak
Michael Peak is a mountain summit located in Yoho National Park, in the Canadian Rockies of British Columbia, Canada. Its nearest higher peak is The President, to the west-northwest. Both are part of the President Range which is a subset of the Waputik Mountains. Michael Peak is a landmark seen 4.5 kilometres north-northeast of Emerald Lake, three kilometres southwest of Takakkaw Falls, and 10 kilometres north of Field, British Columbia. History Originally known as Angle Peak, the mountain was renamed by Edward Whymper in 1901 for his friend Arthur Michael (1853–1942), an organic chemistry professor who participated in the 1897 first ascents of Mount Lefroy and Mount Victoria with J. Norman Collie, also a fellow Professor of Organic Chemistry. The first ascent of Michael Peak was made 1900 by James Outram, with Christian Kaufmann as guide. Field is an unincorporated community of approximately 169 people located in the Kicking Horse River valley of southeastern British Columbia, Canada, within the confines of Yoho National Park. Emerald River
The Emerald River is a short river in British Columbia. It is about long and drains the waters of Emerald Lake to the Kicking Horse River. The river exits the lake's south end and flows in a southern direction for about to its mouth, which is at almost exactly the same place as the mouth of the Amiskwi River. It picks up three named tributaries; Hamilton Creek, Russell Creek and Kendel Creek. The name of the river was adopted in the 5th Report of the Geographic Board of Canada, 30 June 1904. Yoho River
The Yoho River is a silty, swift tributary of the Kicking Horse River in the Canadian province of British Columbia. The river is entirely within Yoho National Park. Course The Yoho River originates at the north end of Yoho National Park and flows generally south to join the Kicking Horse River some distance northeast of Field. It begins at the toe of the Yoho Glacier and flows within from its source it has already received the waters of Waves Creek, Twin Falls Creek, Fairy Creek & the Little Yoho River. It continues south for another to its confluence with the stream Takakkaw Falls is on. Along that stretch is a significant canyon in which the river drops over at least one major waterfall. Surface runoff (also known as overland flow) is the flow of water occurring on the ground surface when excess rainwater, stormwater, meltwater, or other sources, can no longer sufficiently rapidly infiltrate in the soil. Köppen Climate Classification
The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936. Laramide Orogeny
The Laramide orogeny was a time period of mountain building in western North America, which started in the Late Cretaceous, 70 to 80 million years ago, and ended 35 to 55 million years ago. The exact duration and ages of beginning and end of the orogeny are in dispute. The Laramide orogeny occurred in a series of pulses, with quiescent phases intervening. The major feature that was created by this orogeny was deep-seated, thick-skinned deformation, with evidence of this orogeny found from Canada to northern Mexico, with the easternmost extent of the mountain-building represented by the Black Hills of South Dakota. Arête
An arête ( ) is a narrow ridge of rock which separates two valleys. It is typically formed when two glaciers erode parallel U-shaped valleys. Arêtes can also form when two glacial cirques erode headwards towards one another, although frequently this results in a saddle-shaped pass, called a col. The edge is then sharpened by freeze-thaw weathering, and the slope on either side of the arête steepened through mass wasting events and the erosion of exposed, unstable rock.
