Mertingen is a municipality in the district of Donau-Ries in Bavaria in Germany. The important Roman road, the Via Claudia Augusta was built in this area near the location of "Burghoefe" during the 1st century AD, linking Italy with the Danube river. It had its northern end around Mertingen, it then branched into a Roman military road following the Danube river from its origin in the West to Regensburg in the East. Donau-Ries (''Danube-Ries'') is a ''Landkreis'' (district) in Swabia, Bavaria, Germany. It is bounded by (from the north and clockwise) the districts of Ansbach, Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, Eichstätt, Neuburg-Schrobenhausen, Aichach-Friedberg, Augsburg and Dillingen, and by the state of Baden-Württemberg (districts of Heidenheim and Ostalbkreis). The Via Claudia Augusta is an ancient Roman road, which linked the valley of the Po River with Rhaetia (encompassing parts of modern Eastern Switzerland, Northern Italy, Western Austria, Southern Germany and all of Liechtenstein) across the Alps. The route still exists, and since the 1990s increased interest in long-distance hiking and cycling have made the German and Austrian stretches of the Via Claudia Augusta popular among tourists, with the result that modern signage (''illustration'') identifies the revitalised track.
