Mergellina Station (Naples Metro)
Mergellina is a station of the Naples Metro in Naples, Campania, Italy. The platforms serving Line 2 have been active since 25 September 1925, while the one serving Line 6 has been active since 4 February 2007. The station is currently managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) and ANM. However, the commercial area of the passenger building is managed by Centostazioni. Train services are operated by Trenitalia. Each of these companies is a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), Italy's state-owned rail company. Location Mergellina station is on Corso Vittorio Emanuele, to the south west of the city centre. It is about north of the Mergellina marina, from where the hydrofoils depart for the islands in the Gulf of Naples. An inclined elevator or inclined lift is a form of cable railway that hauls rail cars up a steep gradient. Introduction An inclined elevator consists of one or two inclined tracks on a slope with a single car on each carrying payload. In the case of a two-track configuration each car operates in a ''shuttle principle'': it moves up and down on its own track independently of the other car. A car is either winched up to the station on the top of the incline where the cable is collected on a winch drum. Alternatively a car is balanced by a counterweight moving along the track in the opposite direction, quite similar to an ordinary lift. Unlike a standard elevator, it can go up tilted grades. Line 2 (Italian: ''Linea 2'') is a rapid transit service operated by Trenitalia in the city of Naples, Italy. It connects 12 stations. Line 2 operates on the urban railway, which crosses the city of Naples from west to east. All regional trains, differently from metropolitan trains, are received by Campi Flegrei station in different platforms. Line 2 also has some minor regional extensions. These are the Naples-Caserta and Naples-Salerno (all these services use the Passante rapid transit railway, of which the latter two start from Campi Flegrei station). Villa Literno–Napoli Gianturco Railway
The Villa Literno–Napoli Gianturco railway (also called the ''Naples Passante'') is a 16 km-long double track line which connects the line to Rome via Formia with the line to Salerno near Napoli Gianturco station through Naples and its north-western suburbs. This line is used by the metropolitan trains named as line 2. History With the construction of Rome–Naples Direttissima, it was decided to build a through railway ("Passante"), partly on the surface and partly underground, directly connecting the line from Salerno with the line to Rome, without the need to reverse trains. The line would also allow the construction of several railway stations in order to create an urban metropolitan service. Although work started in 1906, it was not opened until 20 September 1925 due to delays in completing the work, mainly as a result of World War I and the hilliness of the route.
