''Mennegoxylon'', commonly referred to as snakewood, is a genus of now extinct trees exhibiting a cell structure resembling snake skin when viewed in cross section. ''Mennegoxylon'' is found in the Eocene age Yegua Formation of Texas and Louisiana, USA. Specifically, many examples of snakewood have been found in College Station, Texas. It has been classified as a genus in the Nyctaginaceae. Nyctaginaceae
Nyctaginaceae, the four o'clock family, is a family of around 33 genera and 290 species of flowering plants, widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, with a few representatives in temperate regions. The family has a unique fruit type, called an " anthocarp", and many genera have extremely large (>100 µm) pollen grains. The family has been almost universally recognized by plant taxonomists. The APG II system (2003; unchanged from the APG system of 1998), assigns it to the order Caryophyllales in the clade core eudicots. A phylogenetic study by Levin has justified the combination of ''Selinocarpus'' and ''Ammocodon'' into the genus '' Acleisanthes''. Alberta Mennega
Alberta Maria Wilhelmina "Bep" Mennega (July 29, 1914 – December 20, 2009) was a Dutch botanist renowned for her studies into the anatomy of wood and plant systematics. Biography Mennega studied biology at the Utrecht University, earning her Ph.D in 1938.Stafleu, F. A., Cowan, R. S., & Mennega, E. A. (1979)Taxonomic literature: A selective guide to botanical publications and collections with dates, commentaries and types.Utrecht: Bohn, Scheltema & Holkema. In 1946, she accepted a position at the Utrecht University Botanic Gardens. The university was in need of people who were able to assess the quality of imported wood, and although her educational background was in physiology, she was retrained in wood anatomy. Yegua Formation
The Yegua Formation is a geologic formation in Texas. It preserves fossils dating back to the Paleogene period. Geological Structure The Yegua Formation is a minor siliciclastic progradation off the Gulf of Mexico shelf margin. It lies between the larger Early Eocene and the Oligocene shelf-margin progradations. During Yegua time, around four to eight sea-level fluctuations with a 100-300 ka period pushed marine rocks toward the basin margins and pushed deltaic sedimentation to and past the shelf edge. Due to the limited sand supply and the flat coastal plains, the updip depositional complexes are almost entirely separated from the downdip shelf-edge deltas and slope fans.
