Eparchy of Nossa Senhora do Paraíso em São Paulo ( la, Eparchia Dominae Nostrae Paradisi Sancti Pauli Graecorum Melkitarum) is an eparchy located in the city of São Paulo in the Ecclesiastical province of São Paulo in Brazil. Territory and statistics The eparchy includes all Melkite Catholic faithful of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Brazil. Its eparchial seat is the city of São Paulo, where is located the Nossa Senhora do Paraíso Cathedral. The territory is divided into five parishes. In 2013 there were 436,000 Catholics. The term Melkite (), also written Melchite, refers to various Eastern Christian churches of the Byzantine Rite and their members originating in the Middle East. The term comes from the common Central Semitic root ''m-l-k'', meaning "royal", and by extension "imperial" or loyal to the Byzantine Emperor. Joseph Gébara (born 10 June 1965 in Amatour, Lebanon) is a Lebanese Catholic archeparch of the Byzantine Rite, and current Archeparch of the Melkite Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Petra and Philadelphia in Amman. Archbishop Pierre (Boutros) Mouallem (born 10 May 1928) is the retired Melkite Greek Catholic Archbishop of Akko, Haifa and the Galilee, in Israel. Biography Mouallem was born in Eilabun, Galilee, in 1928 and received his education at the Minor and Major Seminaries of St. Paul Missionaries, Harissa, Lebanon, and was ordained a priest in 1955. Spiridon Mattar (March 1, 1921 – July 26, 2014) was an Egyptian-born Brazilian Melkite Greek Catholic hierarch of the Melkite Greek Catholic Eparchy of Nossa Senhora do Paraíso em São Paulo. Elias Coueter (born 15 August 1896 in Damascus, Syria, - died on 16 June 1985) was bishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church and first eparch of the Melkite Greek Catholic Eparchy of Nossa Senhora do Paraíso em São Paulo for all Melkites in Brazil.
