Melba Flats, Tasmania
Melba Flats is a railway siding on the Emu Bay Railway east of Zeehan that served as a terminus for trains carrying copper ore from the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company in west coast Tasmania, once the Emu Bay Railway ceased services into the Zeehan townsite. The section of line near Melba Flats was operational by December 1900. The Rosebery to Zeehan connection closed on the 14 August 1965, however the Rosebery to Melba Flats section re-opened on the 15 January 1970. The Mount Lyell company had trucks deliver the ore along the Queenstown to Zeehan road to this siding, until 1994. The Melba Flats area is the site of numerous historical workings; hand workings and hand constructed mining shafts dating back to the 1880s. Lead, zinc, silver, tin and nickel have been located in varying quantities in the area. Zeehan is a town on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia south-west of Burnie. It is part of the West Coast Council, along with the seaport Strahan, and neighbouring mining towns of Dundas, Rosebery and Queenstown. Charles Whitham
Charles Whitham was the author of the oft-reprinted ''Western Tasmania: A land of Riches and Beauty'', which was a comprehensive study of the geographical features of West Coast, Tasmania and the conditions of the region in the 1920s. Early life Charles Whitham was born in India in 1873. He and his parents travelled to Tasmania in 1886. His first book was published in 1917. ''Western Tasmania'' The book was originally published in 1924 and reprinted in 1949 and in 1984. Extracts from the book were reproduced in ''The Mercury'' in the 1930s. The book is a mix of geographical and historical information about the west coast, and includes sections on Macquarie Harbour and the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company. Pentlandite
Pentlandite is an iron–nickel sulfide with the chemical formula . Pentlandite has a narrow variation range in Ni:Fe but it is usually described as having a Ni:Fe of 1:1. It also contains minor cobalt, usually at low levels as a fraction of weight. Pentlandite forms isometric crystals, but it is normally found in massive granular aggregates. Niccolite
Nickeline or niccolite is a mineral consisting primarily of nickel arsenide (NiAs). The naturally-occurring mineral contains roughly 43.9% nickel and 56.1% arsenic by mass, but composition of the mineral may vary slightly. Small quantities of sulfur, iron and cobalt are usually present, and sometimes the arsenic is largely replaced by antimony. Allegiance Mining NL (ASX:AGM) is an Australian mining company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange on 29 October 1993. Allegiance operated the Avebury nickel mine project on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia. Allegiance had an ongoing exploration effort targeting nickel sulphide deposits around the Avebury nickel project area and production was scheduled to start in 2008. Avebury was a significant nickel sulphide discovery located 8 km west of Zeehan. The mineralisation is essentially remobilised nickel sulphide (pentlandite mineral) and is of simple metallurgy, producing some of the world's highest-grade nickel sulphide concentrate.
