Allegiance Mining
Allegiance Mining NL (ASX:AGM) is an Australian mining company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange on 29 October 1993. Allegiance operated the Avebury nickel mine project on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia. Allegiance had an ongoing exploration effort targeting nickel sulphide deposits around the Avebury nickel project area and production was scheduled to start in 2008. Avebury was a significant nickel sulphide discovery located 8 km west of Zeehan. The mineralisation is essentially remobilised nickel sulphide (pentlandite mineral) and is of simple metallurgy, producing some of the world's highest-grade nickel sulphide concentrate. On February 21, 2023, Allegiance Mining's U.S. division filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Nickel
Nickel is a chemical element with symbol Ni and atomic number 28. It is a silvery-white lustrous metal with a slight golden tinge. Nickel is a hard and ductile transition metal. Zeehan is a town on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia south-west of Burnie. Nickel Sulphide
Nickel sulfide is any inorganic compound with the formula NiSx. They range in color from bronze (Ni3S2) to black (NiS2). The nickel sulfide with simplest stoichiometry is NiS, also known as the mineral millerite. From the economic perspective, Ni9S8, the mineral pentlandite, is the chief source of mined nickel. Other minerals include heazlewoodite (Ni3S2) and polydymite (Ni3S4). The mineral Vaesite is NiS2. Some nickel sulfides are used commercially as catalysts. Pentlandite is an iron–nickel sulfide with the chemical formula . Pentlandite has a narrow variation range in Ni:Fe but it is usually described as having a Ni:Fe of 1:1. It also contains minor cobalt, usually at low levels as a fraction of weight. Pentlandite forms isometric crystals, but it is normally found in massive granular aggregates. It is brittle with a hardness of 3.5–4 and specific gravity of 4.6–5.0 and is non-magnetic. It has a yellowish bronze color. Pentlandite is the most important source of mined nickel. Zinifex was an Australian company that operated lead and zinc mines, refineries and a lead smelter. It was established in April 2004, when the assets of Pasminco were spun-off.
