Medicine Hat was a former territorial electoral district in Northwest Territories, Canada. The electoral district was created with the passage of the ''North-West Representation Act of 1888''. The primary population center and the districts name sake was the city of Medicine Hat. The Northwest Territories (abbreviated ''NT'' or ''NWT''; french: Territoires du Nord-Ouest, formerly ''North-Western Territory'' and ''North-West Territories'' and namely shortened as ''Northwest Territory'') is a federal territory of Canada. Medicine Hat is a city in Southern Alberta, southeast Alberta, Canada. It is located along the South Saskatchewan River. It is approximately east of Lethbridge and southeast of Calgary. Thomas Tweed
Thomas Andrew Tweed (April 14, 1853 – April 4, 1906) was a merchant and political figure in the Northwest Territories, Canada. He represented Medicine Hat (N.W.T. electoral district), Medicine Hat in the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1888 to 1894 as a Conservative. He was born in Kingston, Ontario, Kingston, Canada West, the son of Thomas Tweed and Jane Hiditch, and was educated there. He served in the Wolseley Expedition, Red River Expedition of 1870 with Garnet Wolseley. Tweed was employed in cotton mills in Montreal and Cornwall, Ontario, reaching the position of manager. In 1873, he married Helen Sutherland. He went west to Medicine Hat, Alberta, Medicine Hat in 1883, where he established a general store in partnership with James Alexander Lougheed. Edward Fearon
Edward L. Fearon (September 20, 1859November 3, 1933) was a Canadian politician. He served on the North-West Legislative Assembly for Medicine Hat from 1894 to 1898. Early life Edward L. Fearon was born September 20, 1859 in Scotland. Fearon moved to Kingston, Ontario in 1878 and joined the North-West Mounted Police where he was stationed at Fort Walsh. Political life Fearon contested the 1894 North-West Territories general election in the Medicine Hat electoral district against incumbent Thomas Tweed. In the years prior to the election, the Medicine Hat community became divided with Tweed around the issues of prohibition, hospital supply purchasing and obtaining government contracts for friends. Fearon was a popular rancher near Maple Creek. During the campaign Tweed's opponents depicted him as hostile to labour, against provincehood, and an ineffective representative. William Finlay
William Thomas Finlay (July 12, 1853 – May 9, 1914) was a merchant, politician and cabinet minister in Alberta and Northwest Territories, Canada. Finlay served as the second mayor of Medicine Hat, represented the electoral district of Medicine Hat in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, and served in the Cabinet of Alexander Cameron Rutherford as Alberta's first Minister of Agriculture and Provincial Secretary from 1905 to 1909. Early life Finlay was born in Lisburn, Ireland on July 12, 1853, to John Finlay and Christina Brownlee. He was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and worked in the wholesale grocery business before moving to Montreal, Quebec in 1873. The 1888 North-West Territories general election was the first general election in the history of the North-West Territories, Canada. Elections were held in various districts between 20 June and 30 June 1888. This was the only general election, where the writs were issued to return on various days. Prior to 1888, members of the 1st Council of the North-West Territories were elected in by-elections to supplement members appointed by the Government of Canada. In order to have an elected member, a constituency needed to be set up in an area with 1,000 people. Others members were appointed. 1891 Northwest Territories General Election
The 1891 North-West Territories general election was held on 7 November 1891 to elect 25 members of the Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories, Canada. It was the second general election in the History of the North-West Territories. The legislature for the first time had no appointed members. It had 25 elected members, six more than in the previous election: the assembly had grown by three members; the three appointed "at large" legal advisors who had sat in the assembly in the first legislature were no longer there.
