Mederdra
Mederdra is a small town and commune in south-west Mauritania, near the border of Senegal. In 2000 it had a population of 6,858. Transport It lies on the route of a proposed railway line to connect phosphate mines at Kaédi with the capital and port of Nouakchott. Famous citizens Malouma Meidah, a popular singer and politician, was born in Mederdra in 1960. Horma Ould Babana, politician, was born here on 12 March 1912. Trarza
Trarza ( ar, ولاية الترارزة) is a region in southwest Mauritania. Its capital is Rosso. Other major cities and towns include Mederdra and Boutilimit. Trarza borders the regions of Inchiri and Adrar to the north, Brakna to the east, and the country of Senegal to the south. Its western coastline on the Atlantic Ocean is interrupted only by the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott, which the region completely surrounds. In 2013, the population of the region was 272,773, compared to 345,076 in 2011. There were 47.79 per cent females and 52.21 per cent males. In 2008, the activity rate was 42.60 and economic dependency ratio was 0.99. The literacy rate for people aged 15 years and over was 79.0 per cent. Malouma Meidah
Malouma Mint El Meidah ( ar, المعلومة منت الميداح, al-Maʿlūma Mint al-Maydāḥ), also simply Maalouma or Malouma (; born October 1, 1960), is a Mauritanian singer, songwriter and politician. Raised in the south-west of the country by parents versed in traditional Mauritanian music, she first performed when she was twelve, soon featuring in solo concerts. Her first song "Habibi Habeytou" harshly criticized the way in which women were treated by their husbands. Though an immediate success, it caused an outcry from the traditional ruling classes. After being forced into marriage while still a teenager, Malouma had to give up singing until 1986. She developed her own style combining traditional music with blues, jazz, and electro. Appearing on television with songs addressing highly controversial topics such as conjugal life, poverty and inequality, she was censored in Mauritania in the early 1990s but began to perform abroad by the end of the decade. Mauritania is a coastal country so there are many ports along its coast and there are a few big rivers that run through the country. Lastly, there are 26 airports spread out throughout the country. Horma Ould Babana
Horma Ould Babana (1 March 1912 – 7 July 1979), also known as Ahmedou Bin Horma, Ahmedou Ould Horma Ould Babana and Horma Babana, was a Mauritanian politician who was active in the country's struggle against colonialism. Babana was the first Mauritanian deputy to the French National Assembly. Early life Born on 1 March 1912 in Mederdra, Babana studied the Quran and Arabic language and literature. He was educated in Saint-Louis, Senegal. Babana's mother and neighbours were concerned that when he left his village, he would lose his cultural identity and support the French colonists. After completing his studies at age 27, he taught briefly before becoming a French translator throughout Mauritania for ten years. When Babana clashed with French officers in Atar over their harassment of Mauritanian women at a dance, he was fired, fined and exiled to Niger. Kaédi ( ar, كيهيدي) is the largest city and administrative center of the Gorgol Region of Southern Mauritania, located on the border with Senegal. It is approximately 435 km from Mauritania's capital, Nouakchott. Overview The city sits within the " Chemama" Riverine zone along the north bank of the River Senegal where it connects with the Gorgol River. This region is one of the few areas of settled agriculture in the country.
