Meadowbrook Country Club is a historic country club and national historic district located near Garner, Wake County, North Carolina. The club was founded in 1959, with initial improvements made throughout the 1960s. The contributing resources are the lake (1961); pier (1961); picnic area (1962); driving range (1966); nine-hole golf course designed by Gene Hamm (1966); one-story, concrete block, Modern Movement style clubhouse (1962, 1970, 1971); and 18-hole putt-putt course (1962). Meadowbrook Country Club was founded as a private country club for African-Americans. Meadowbrook Country Club
Meadowbrook Country Club is a country club in Northville Township, Wayne County, near Northville, Michigan. The idea for Meadowbrook Country Club, a private golf and social club, came about in 1916 when 23 Northville businessmen purchased of the Fred C. Cochran Farm. The club was named after a brook, which ran through the property. Its golf course hosted the PGA Championship in 1955, won by Doug Ford. Willie Park, Jr is credited with designing the original Meadowbrook 6-hole course which are present-day holes #10, #11, #7, #2, #3, and #18. Meadowbrook has hosted The Motor City Open which was a PGA Tour event played at various clubs in and around Detroit from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. The PGA Tour record for the longest sudden-death playoff was established at the 1949 Motor City Open, played at Meadowbrook. Clearview Golf Club
The Clearview Golf Club (also Clearview Golf Course) was the first golf course in the United States to be built, owned, and operated by an African American. The club was started in 1946, with Bill Powell purchasing the land and working on it in his spare time. It opened to the public and to all races in April 1948. The club, which is located outside of East Canton, Ohio, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Bill Powell's daughter, Renee Powell who learned to play on Clearview, went on to become the second black woman to play on the LPGA tour. Shady Rest Golf And Country Club
The Shady Rest Golf and Country Club is located at 820 Jerusalem Road in the Township of Scotch Plains in Union County, New Jersey. Established in 1921, it was one of the first, if not the first, African American country clubs in the United States. From 1931 to 1964, it was the home of John Shippen (1879–1968), the first American golf professional and the first African American to compete in the U.S. Open. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 7, 2022, for its significance in entertainment, ethnic heritage, recreation, and social history from 1921 to 1964. Meadowbrook Country Club (Chesterfield County, Virginia) is a private golf and social club located at 3700 Cogbill Road in Richmond, Virginia. The club was formed in 1957. History of the estate The Meadowbrook Country Club was once Meadowbrook Farm, a large and historic estate owned by the Jeffress family, who were among the earliest settlers in Virginia. The Jeffress family lived in a Tudor mansion that eventually became the original clubhouse for the country club. The family began the elaborate plantings and garden on their land, and the large formal garden was later enhanced by the "personal stamp" of Charles F. Gillette, who was also working on gardens for the Virginia Governor's Executive Mansion in Richmond and on Agecroft Hall. In 2013 Lake Chesdin Golf Club merged with Meadowbrook Country Club.
