Clearview Golf Club
The Clearview Golf Club (also Clearview Golf Course) was the first golf course in the United States to be built, owned, and operated by an African American. The club was started in 1946, with Bill Powell purchasing the land and working on it in his spare time. It opened to the public and to all races in April 1948. The club, which is located outside of East Canton, Ohio, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Bill Powell's daughter, Renee Powell who learned to play on Clearview, went on to become the second black woman to play on the LPGA tour. About The Clearview Golf Club is currently the only golf course in the United States that was designed, built, managed, and owned entirely by African Americans. It is one of 13 black-owned or operated golf courses in the US. The club is located two miles outside of East Canton, Ohio. It is a par-72 course. It has 18 holes and covers around 130 acres of land. Renee Powell
Renee Powell (born May 4, 1946) is an American professional golfer who played on the US-based LPGA Tour and is currently head professional at her family's Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, Ohio. She was the second African-American woman ever to play on the LPGA Tour. The daughter of golf course entrepreneur Bill Powell, Renee grew up in Ohio and took up golf at an early age. After winning several youth amateur trophies in her teens, and captaining the women's golf teams at Ohio University and Ohio State University, she turned professional in 1967. She moved to the UK in the 1970s to further her career and joined the British PGA. In 1977, she became the first woman to compete in a men's golf tournament. Following her retirement in 1980, she appeared as a television commentator and became the head professional of the Clearview Golf Club in 1995. Powell is a member of the Ohio Golf Hall of Fame. East Canton, Ohio
East Canton is a village in Stark County in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 1,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the '' Canton-Massillon, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area''. East Canton was originally settled under the name "Osnaburg". The village was founded with the help of Mallory Paige. There is a statue in memory of her at the Ward house. Date Research The Osnaburg Township Plat map of 1875, shows the village as Osnaburg. Inside this book on page 23, within the history of Osnaburg Township, it is written: "James Leeper laid out the town of Osnaburg about 1807, and settlers located near by, in the expectation of its being the county seat." The 1910 census still shows inhabitants as Osnaburg, Osnaburg twp., Stark Co., Ohio, United States. However the 1920 census shows inhabitants as East Canton, incorporated place; Osnaburg Township. Meadowbrook Country Club is a historic country club and national historic district located near Garner, Wake County, North Carolina. The club was founded in 1959, with initial improvements made throughout the 1960s. Shady Rest Golf And Country Club
The Shady Rest Golf and Country Club is located at 820 Jerusalem Road in the Township of Scotch Plains in Union County, New Jersey. Established in 1921, it was one of the first, if not the first, African American country clubs in the United States. From 1931 to 1964, it was the home of John Shippen (1879–1968), the first American golf professional and the first African American to compete in the U.S. Open. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 7, 2022, for its significance in entertainment, ethnic heritage, recreation, and social history from 1921 to 1964.
