Michael Pettis
Michael Pettis (born June 16, 1958) is an American professor of finance at Guanghua School of Management at Peking University in Beijing and a nonresident senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He was founder and co-owner of punk-rock nightclub D22 in Beijing, which closed in January 2012. Pettis is a speaker and writer on global economic growth, having published two books on the subject. In 2013, Princeton University Press published his second book, ''The Great Rebalancing: Trade, Conflict, and the Perilous Road Ahead for the World Economy''. Carsick Cars
Carsick Cars is a Chinese indie rock trio formed in March 2005. Carsick Cars released their self-titled debut album in 2007 on Maybe Mars in China and on tenzenmen in Australia. The band joined Sonic Youth for their European tour in Prague and Vienna in 2007. A 7" single of tracks taken from that album was released in the UK by Suyin Records. In June 2009, the band released their second album, ''You Can Listen, You Can Talk''. In March 2010, 2011, and 2012 Carsick Cars performed at the SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas. As of November 2010, Li Weisi and Li Qing left the band to focus on their other projects. They were replaced by He Fan (Birdstriking) on bass and Ben Ben (BOYZ & GIRL, Skip Skip Ben Ben). Ben Ben was subsequently replaced by Houzi. Li Weisi (bass) and Li Qing (drums) returned in 2017 and remain in the band. Joyside
Joyside is a Chinese rock band. They started out as an underground band by Bian Yuan in 2001, and they went from performing in small clubs for three years to recording CDs and performing on large stages. The band consists of Bian Yuan as vocalist, Liu Hao as bassist, Liu Hongwei, and Yang Yang playing guitar, and Guan Zheng on drums. Along with working as a band, the individuals members are also part of other musical projects. They were the subject of the documentary ''Wasted Orient'' by Kevin Fritz who felt they represented a side of China not seen in the West. Reception In April, May and June 2007 Joyside embarked on a major European tour playing sold-out shows in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, and England. Snapline
Snapline is a band based in Beijing, consisting of Li Qing on guitar and keyboards and Li Weisi on bass, who met while at students the Beijing Institute of Technology. Their music was dedicated to working out in a contemporary Beijing context the sounds and ideas produced by the noise and minimalist musicians of the 1970s and 1980s, especially focusing on the New York scene of that period. Wanting also explore the dark, industrial music coming out of England during that period, especially from bands like Joy Division and the Cure, the two created a side project, which performed strange, drum-machine-driven music over dark, minor chords. Dear Eloise (band)
Dear Eloise () is a Chinese rock band composed of vocalist/producer Yang Haisong (杨海崧) and Sun Xia (孙霞). Formed in Beijing in 2008, the pair are known for their lo-fi DIY recordings that combine elements of shoegaze, indie pop, noise rock and experimental music. In addition to playing all of the instruments themselves, the husband-wife duo record and edit all of the band's music in their home studio. While they do not perform live and have released their recordings inconspicuously through the Beijing-based vinyl label Genjing Records and CD label Maybe Mars, the duo has managed to gain a loyal following in both the Chinese independent music scene and with critics abroad.
