Maureen Maher
Maureen Maher (born 1967) is an American television news reporter and correspondent. She is primarily known as one of the hosts of the CBS program 48 Hours. Early life Maher was born in the state of Michigan, just outside Detroit. Her birth parents were high school seniors unable to provide for Maureen and subsequently gave her up for adoption. In 1991, she graduated from Loyola University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications. Career Maureen Maher started her broadcasting career with Chicago-based radio station WLUW (FM) as morning-drive news anchor in 1991. Maher then moved to Detroit in 1992, where she worked as a reporter for Detroit-based TV station WJBK-TV and CBS-owned radio stationWWJ (AM) until 1995. In 1995-97, Maher worked as a news anchor for WJRT-TV in Michigan, covering breaking news, including the Oklahoma City bombing and the Decker farm raid. Chicago Porch Collapse
On June 29, 2003, the deadliest porch collapse in United States history occurred in Chicago. An overloaded balcony collapsed during a party in an apartment building, killing thirteen people and seriously injuring fifty-seven others. The ensuing investigation was highly critical of the way the balcony was built, finding a large number of errors in its construction which ultimately resulted in the collapse. However, the building's owner, LG Properties, and its president, Philip Pappas, continues to blame overcrowding on the balcony for its complete structural failure, although he has taken steps to strengthen the balconies at other properties to prevent a recurrence of the disaster. The accident resulted in sweeping inspections of similar structures across Chicago, with 1,260 cases being acted on by the city authorities. Scott Peterson
Scott Lee Peterson (born October 24, 1972) is an American convicted murderer. In 2004, he was convicted of the first-degree murder of his wife, Laci, who was pregnant at the time, and the second-degree murder of their unborn son, Conner, in Modesto, California. In 2005, Peterson was sentenced to death by lethal injection. His case was put on automatic appeal to the Supreme Court of California. On August 24, 2020, the death penalty for Peterson was overturned, though his conviction was upheld. He was re-sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on December 8, 2021. Kenyan Hotel Bombing
The 2002 Mombasa attacks was a two-pronged terrorist attack on 28 November 2002 in Mombasa, Kenya against an Israeli-owned hotel and a plane belonging to Arkia Airlines. An all-terrain vehicle crashed through a barrier outside the Paradise Hotel and blew up, killing 13 and injuring 80. At the same time, attackers fired two surface-to-air missiles at an Israeli charter plane. The Paradise Hotel was the only Israeli-owned hotel in the Mombasa area. The attacks were believed to be orchestrated by al-Qaeda operatives in Somalia in an attempt to disrupt the Israeli tourist industry on the African continent.
