Matula
''Matula'' () is a 1941 film from the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia) which was directed by Tan Tjoei Hock and produced by The Teng Chun of Java Industrial Film. The black-and-white film, now likely lost, follows a young man who tries to give a woman's soul to a shaman as payment for being made handsome. Plot A rich yet hideously deformed youth named Matula (Ferry Kock) visits a '' dukun'' (shaman) named Tello, asking to be made handsome. Tello agrees, then does the deed. When Matula asks him to name his price, Tello asks to be paid with a soul. Using his magic, Tello arranges for Emma (Dewi Mada), the daughter of a rich businessman, to meet Matula in a plantation, where Matula can convince her to come with him. Upon realising what is happening, Emma's father Johan and her fiancé Paul chase down Matula. They are too late, as Tello has taken Emma's soul. Tan Tjoei Hock
Tan Tjoei Hock (15 April 1908 – 1984) was an Indonesian journalist and filmmaker. Born in Batavia, he was discovered by The Teng Chun in the late 1930s. Tan became one of the most productive film directors of the Dutch East Indies between 1940 and 1941, directing nine films – primarily action. Biography Tan was born in Batavia (now Jakarta), Dutch East Indies, on 15 April 1908. He dropped out during his first year of senior high school. By the late 1930s he had become a businessman, spending his nights as an unpaid assistant at a drama troupe that frequently performed at Prinsen Park (now Lokasari); while working with this troupe Tan met The Teng Chun, who brought him to work at The's Java Industrial Film (JIF). Ferry Kock
Frederik de Kock (16 January 1904 – 23 June 1945) was an Indonesian actor and singer who was active in the 1930s and 1940s. He was one of the top five stars of Dardanella, along with Devi Dja, Astaman, Tan Tjeng Bok, and Miss Riboet II. Early life Frederik de Kock was born on 16 January 1904 at Duymaer van Twist, a cargo ship owned by Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij, the Dutch East Indies shipping company. He has a younger brother, Eduard de Kock, an actor, who was born in 1905, and later known as Eddy Kock and starred in ''Kedok Ketawa'' (1940). Personal life Kock is a Christian Protestant. He was married to Noni Magdalena who later became an actress and using the stage name Dewi Mada, the couple later joined the Dardanella troupe and starred together in '' Rentjong Atjeh'' (1940) and ''Matula'' (1941). Sardi (musician)
Mas Sardi (December 1910 – 21 October 1953) was an Indonesian composer and musician notable for being the country's first professional music supervisor. He and his wife Hadidjah were the parents of Citra Award-winning musician Idris Sardi. Biography Sardi was born in Yogyakarta, Dutch East Indies, in December 1910. He was educated at a Lagere School, but also studied the violin with his father, the leader of the Norma Orchestra in the palace of Sultan Hamengkubuwono VII. Sardi was later sent to study with other men, including one named Fernando and another named Jonocy; the latter of the two was the leader of an orchestra which played at the local society building. Sardi played for Jonocy, but eventually left to tour Central Java with Kunstkring; he would sometimes lead the orchestra at the Sultan's palace, if his father was unavailable. The Teng Chun
The Teng Chun (; 18 June 1902 – 25 February 1977), also known by his Indonesian name Tahjar Ederis, was a Chinese Indonesian film producer. Born to a rich businessman, The became interested in film while still a youth. After a period as an exporter, in 1930 he established Cino Motion Picture to produce films in the Dutch East Indies. In a little over a decade he and his company had released at least 31 films, including some of the country's first talkies. Although he experienced a brief resurgence during the 1950s, after Indonesia became independent, he spent the last years of his life as an English teacher. Mohamad Mochtar
Mohamad Mochtar (1 July 1918 – 1 December 1981), usually credited as Moh Mochtar, was an Indonesian film actor active from 1939 until his death in 1981. Biography Mochtar was born in Cianjur, West Java, Dutch East Indies, on 1 July 1918. He dropped out of school in the first year of Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs (junior high school). Sometime afterwards he was signed by the theatre company Miss Riboet's Orion for their association football, football team; he had been a fan of the game since his youth. Mochtar was later asked to perform on stage. By the late 1930s he was skilled at the traditional martial art of ''silat''. Sinematek Indonesia, or Sinematek for short, is a film archive located in Jakarta. Established in 1975 by Misbach Yusa Biran and Asrul Sani, the archive was the first in Southeast Asia, and remains the only one in Indonesia. It is home to roughly 2,700 films, mostly Indonesian, and also houses numerous reference works. Since 2001 it has been underfunded. Description Sinematek is located in the Hajji Usmar Ismail Center, a five-story building located on Rasuna Said Street in Kuningan, South Jakarta, and managed by the Usmar Ismail Foundation; it has held this location since 1977.
