Mattia Furlani
Mattia Furlani (born 7 February 2005) is an Italian high jumper and long jumper. He won gold medals in both events at the 2022 European Under-18 Championships. Furlani holds the European U20 indoor record for the long jump. In May 2023, at age 18, he leapt 8.44 m with wind assistance in the event, a mark better than the world U20 record and the longest in history by an U20 athlete in all conditions. Early life and background Mattia Furlani is a son of the former high jumper Marcello Furlani (personal best of 2.27 m) who is also his coach. His sister Erika (born 1996) is also a high jumper (1.94 m personal best). Career In 2022, Furlani won two gold medals at the European U18 Championships in Jerusalem, in the high jump and in the long jump. The European Athletics U18 Championships (named as European Athletics Youth Championships in 2016) are a biennial athletics competition for European athletes under the age of eighteen ( youth category). The creation of the competition stemmed from the 2013 European Athletics Congress. The event was created to promote the sport among young people in Europe. Each country may send a maximum of two athletes per event. The European U18 Championships will be the third age category championships organised by the European Athletic Association, following on from the long-running European Athletics U20 Championships (first held in 1970) and the European Athletics U23 Championships (first held in 1997). 2023 European Athletics Indoor Championships
The 2023 European Athletics Indoor Championships will be held from 2 to 5 March 2023 at the Ataköy Athletics Arena in Istanbul, Turkey, the first time the event has taken place in this country although the venue did stage the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships, 2012 World Indoor Championships. Wind Assistance
In track and field, wind assistance is the benefit that an athlete receives during a race or event as registered by a wind gauge. Wind is one of many forms of weather that can affect sport. Due to a tailwind helping to enhance the speed of the athlete in events like certain sprint races ( 100 and 200 metres), 100/ 110 metres hurdles, the triple jump and the long jump, there is a limit to how much assisting wind the athlete may perform under if the performance is to establish a record. If a tail wind exceeds the result cannot be registered as a record on any level. However, the results within that competition still are valid because all athletes in a race would get equal assistance, and in field events it is just the luck of the circumstance at the moment of the attempt.
