Matthew Hindley
Matthew Hindley (born 1974, Cape Town, South Africa) is a South African painter. He graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, Cape Town in 2002, where he was awarded the ''Michaelis Prize''. As one of the country's most recognized younger painters, Hindley’s intense, poetic and delving artworks have featured in various critical and seminal South African exhibitions. Recent solo presentations have included ''An Everlasting Once'' at Brundyn + Gonsalves, Cape Town (2011) and ''Twilight of the Idols'' at Biksady, Budapest (2013). Hindley’s exhibition of drawings at David Krut Cape Town coincided with the official launch of the book, ''The Five Magic Pebbles & other stories''. His notable solo painting presentation ''Resurrection (Der Brennende Wald'') was held at Everard Read Cape Town gallery, in October 2015. Michaelis School Of Fine Art
The Michaelis School of Fine Art was founded in 1925, and is the Fine Arts department of the University of Cape Town. The school's current director is Associate Professor Kurt Campbell. There are three research institutions associated with the school, namely The Lucy Lloyd Archive, Research and Exhibition Centre (LLAREC), the Centre for Curating the Archive (CCA) and the Katrine Harries Print Cabinet, which has been instrumental in promoting printmaking as well as conserving and exhibiting prints in the collection. Zwelethu Mthethwa
Zwelethu Mthethwa (born 1960) is a South African painter and photographer. He was convicted of murder in 2017, and is currently incarcerated at Pollsmoor Prison. Biography Mthethwa, a native of Durban, graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. In 1985 he received a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in imaging arts in 1989. Upon returning home, he worked for some years in business, and then became a lecturer on photography and drawing at the Michaelis School in 1994. He left the post in 1999 to devote himself full-time to his art. Mthethwa is known for his large format color photographs, but also works in paint and pastel; he has had over 50 solo exhibitions in galleries around the world. Gugulethu
Gugulethu is a township in the Western Cape, South Africa and is 15 km from Cape Town. Its name is a contraction of ''igugu lethu'', which is Xhosa for ''our pride''.
