Matko Vekić
Matko Vekić (born 1970 in Zagreb, Yugoslavia) is a contemporary Croatian artist working in the medium of painting. He has been described as one of the most prominent Croatian painters of the younger generation. Vekić uses diverse everyday motifs (cars, a rat and a goldfish, insects, traffic interchanges and bridges, relays and transmission lines, women terrorists and body builders, football players and models) to problematise and address the irony the state of contemporary society. Education and early career Matko Vekić was born on 6 November 1970 in Zagreb, Croatia. He graduated in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 1995, in the class of Professor Đuro Seder. ''Nacional'' is a Croatian weekly news magazine published in Zagreb. Founded in 1995 and owned by photographer and journalist Ivo Pukanić, ''Nacional'' quickly gained a reputation for reporting and critical articles about the conservative government led by the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), which was in power during the 1990s. During most of its existence its main rival was ''Globus'' published by Europapress Holding (EPH). The Film Artists' Association of Croatia ( hr, Hrvatsko društvo filmskih djelatnika or HDFD) is a trade union representing artists working in the Croatian film industry. The Filip Trade Collection (Croatian: ''Zbirka Filip Trade'') is a large private collection of contemporary Croatian art. The collection is a subsidiary of Filip Trade, a distribution company with its offices located in the capital city of Croatia, Zagreb. The offices and collection are currently undergoing a move and will soon be relocated in a purpose built venue in the Črnomerec district of Zagreb, Croatia. The Museum of Fine Arts ( hr , Galerija umjetnina), is an art museum in Split, Croatia containing works from the 14th century up to the present day providing an overview of the artistic developments in the local art scene.
