Maryland Route 743 (MD 743) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The state highway runs from MD 36 in Frostburg east to U.S. Route 40 Alternate (US 40 Alternate) in Eckhart Mines. MD 743 is the original alignment of US 40 through Eckhart Mines. The state highway was designated when US 40 bypassed Eckhart Mines around 1950. Route description MD 743 begins at an intersection with MD 36 (New Georges Creek Road) in Frostburg just south of MD 36's southern intersection with US 40 Alternate. The state highway heads east into the unincorporated village of Eckhart Mines as a winding two-lane undivided road. Frostburg, Maryland
Frostburg is a city in Allegany County, Maryland, United States, and is at the head of the Georges Creek Valley. It is part of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Located west of Cumberland, the town is one of the first cities on the "National Road", US 40, and the western terminus of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Frostburg was originally called Mount Pleasant until 1820, when the government developed a postal service, and the town was renamed Frostburg. Since 1973, the city has been served by what is now Interstate 68. The City of Frostburg has an approximate year-round population of 8,075. The total population was 9,002 at the 2010 census. Eckhart Mines, Maryland
Eckhart Mines is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 932. Eckhart Mines lies at the southwestern base of Federal Hill, east of Frostburg and northwest of Clarysville. Braddock Run begins near Eckhart Mines. The town was founded as a company town for the nearby Eckhart Mines. According to the ''Maryland Mining Heritage Guide'', it was "the first coal company town in Maryland." The original owner was George Eckhardt, an immigrant from Germany. The outcrop of the Pittsburgh coal seam here is known locally as "the big vein" or the "14 foot coal". The Eckhart Mines' location here was the first bituminous coal mine developed in the Georges Creek Valley coalfield, because this is where the National Road (now U.S. Route 40 Alternate) crossed the coal outcrop.
