Mary Washington Eagles
The Mary Washington Eagles are the athletic teams that represent the University of Mary Washington, located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in NCAA Division III intercollegiate sports. The Eagles compete as members of the Coast to Coast Athletic Conference (C2C; known as the Capital Athletic Conference before November 2020). All together, Mary Washington sponsors 20 sports: nine for men and 11 for women. The program will add its 21st sport, men's golf, in 2016. History As of 2016, the Eagles have had more than 200 student-athletes achieve All-American status. University Of Mary Washington
The University of Mary Washington (UMW) is a public liberal arts university in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Founded in 1908 as the Fredericksburg Teachers College, the institution was named Mary Washington College in 1938 after Mary Ball Washington, mother of the first president of the United States, George Washington. The General Assembly of Virginia changed the college's name to the University of Mary Washington in 2004 to reflect the addition of graduate and professional programs to the central undergraduate curriculum, as well as the establishment of more than one campus. Coastal Lacrosse Conference
The Coastal Lacrosse Conference (CLC) is a single sport intercollegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA's Division III. The conference was formed between members of the Coast to Coast Athletic Conference and New Jersey Athletic Conference. Member institutions are located on the east coast in the states of Maryland, New Jersey, and Virginia. NCAA Division III
NCAA Division III (D-III) is a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States. D-III consists of athletic programs at colleges and universities that choose not to offer athletic scholarships to their student-athletes. The NCAA's first split was into two divisions, the University and College Divisions, in 1956, the College Division was formed for smaller schools that did not have the resources of the major athletic programs across the country. The College Division split again in 1973 when the NCAA went to its current naming convention: Division I, Division II, and Division III. Division III schools are not allowed to offer athletic scholarships, while D-II schools can. Division III is the NCAA's largest division with around 450 member institutions, which are 80% private and 20% public. Ultimate Frisbee
Ultimate, originally known as ultimate Frisbee, is a non-contact team sport played with a frisbee flung by hand. Ultimate was developed in 1968 by AJ Gator in Maplewood, New Jersey. Although ultimate resembles many traditional sports in its athletic requirements, it is unlike most sports due to its focus on self-officiating, even at the highest levels of competition. The term Frisbee, often used to generically describe all flying discs, is a registered trademark of the Wham-O toy company, and thus the sport is not formally called "ultimate Frisbee", though this name is still in common casual use. Points are scored by passing the disc to a teammate in the opposing end zone. Other basic rules are that players must not take steps while holding the disc, and interceptions, incomplete passes, and passes out of bounds are turnovers.
