Marshall Owen Roberts
Marshall Owen Roberts (March 22, 1813 – September 11, 1880) was an American merchant, financier, railroad man, and prominent art collector. Early life Roberts was born on March 22, 1813, in New York City. He was the son of Welsh born Dr. Owen Roberts and Mrs. (née Newell) Roberts, who was from Birmingham, England. His father, who came to New York in 1798, died four years after Marshall was born. Roberts received a common school education in New York City where he "was characterized by his strong common sense, his natural shrewdness, his pluck, and his boldness." Career Roberts was "one of the foremost businessman of his day." He was a leader in gigantic railroads and operated and built steamships, including the ''Hendrick Hudson'', the largest steam vessel navigating the Hudson River at that time. Ames Van Wart
Ames Van Wart (January 20, 1841 – February 11, 1927) was an American Sculptor who lived in Europe. Early life Van Wart was born on January 20, 1841, in New York City to a wealthy and prominent family. He was a son of Irving van Wart (1808–1896) and, his second wife, Sarah Craig (née Ames) van Wart. His twin brother was Irving Van Wart Jr. and the family had a residence in New York City and a country home in Craigville in Orange County, New York, which had been named after their great-grandfather Hector Craig. He was a grandson of Sarah (née Irving) van Wart (a sister of Washington Irving) and Henry van Wart, an American who became British by special act of Parliament and founded the Birmingham Stock Exchange (where Irving wrote ''Rip Van Winkle''). Accessory Transit Company
The Accessory Transit Company was a company set up by Cornelius Vanderbilt and others during the California Gold Rush in the 1850s, to transport would-be prospectors from the east coast of the United States to the west coast. At the time, an overland journey across the US was an arduous undertaking and could last many weeks. The Accessory Transit Company instead took passengers by steamer from New York to San Juan del Norte on the Caribbean or Mosquito Coast of Nicaragua. From there, they travelled up the Rio San Juan to Lake Nicaragua, crossing the lake to the town of Rivas. A stagecoach then crossed the narrow isthmus to San Juan del Sur, where another steamer travelled to San Francisco. Cornelius Vanderbilt (May 27, 1794 – January 4, 1877), nicknamed "the Commodore", was an American business magnate who built his wealth in railroads and shipping.
