Marimekko
Marimekko Oyj is a Finnish textiles, clothing, and home furnishings company founded by Viljo and Armi Ratia in Helsinki in 1951. Marimekko made important contributions to fashion in the 1960s. It is particularly noted for its brightly colored printed fabrics and simple styles, used both in women's garments and in home furnishings. Two designers in particular, Vuokko Nurmesniemi, with bold stripes, and Maija Isola, with large simple flowered prints such as the ''Unikko'' poppy, created hundreds of distinctive patterns and helped to make Marimekko a household name across the world. Etymology The co-founder, Armi Ratia, first considered ''Armi'' as the company's name, but it was already registered. Maija Isola
Maija Sofia Isola (15 March 1927 – 3 March 2001) was a Finnish designer of printed textiles, and the creator of over 500 patterns, including ''Unikko'' ("Poppy"). The bold, colourful prints she created as the head designer of Marimekko made the Finnish company famous in the 1960s. She also had a successful career as a visual artist. Isola exhibited across Europe, including at the Brussels World Fair and the Milan ''Triennale'', and in the USA. Retrospectives of her work have been held at the Design Museum in Helsinki, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Design Museum, Copenhagen, the Slovene Ethnographic Museum, Ljubljana, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Vuokko Nurmesniemi
Vuokko Hillevi Lilian Eskolin-Nurmesniemi (born 12 February 1930 in Helsinki) is a Finnish textile designer. She is best known for her work as one of the two leading designers of the Marimekko company. Her signature striped ''Jokapoika'' shirt helped to make the company's name. Biography Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi studied ceramics at the Institute of Industrial Arts (in Finnish: ''Taideteollinen oppilaitos'') in Helsinki, Finland. After graduating, she designed glassware and ceramics for Arabia and Nuutajärvi. In 1957, she received a gold medal at the Milan Triennial XI for her glassware. Riitta Immonen
Riitta Immonen (13 May 1918, Ilomantsi – 24 August 2008, Helsinki) was a Finnish fashion artist and entrepreneur, best known as the co-founder of Finnish fashion corporation Marimekko. Immonen was also known for her one-of-a-kind outfits, celebrity clients and a question-and-answer column which she wrote for Finnish fashion magazine ''Eeva'' in the 1950s and 1960s. Riitta Immonen was born in 1918 in Ilomantsi. A self-taught clothing designer, Immonen opened her first design boutique in Helsinki during World War II in 1942 which grew into a success despite the shortages of the ensuing years. In 1951, she and Armi Ratia started up Marimekko to sell fabrics made by Finnish textile firm Printex. Fashion shows debut every season, particularly the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter seasons. This is where the latest fashion trends are made. The Triennale di Milano is a design and art museum in the Parco Sempione in Milan, in Lombardy in northern Italy.
