Margaret Franks
Margaret 'Peggy' Franks (born c.1925) is a former table tennis player from England. Table tennis career From 1947 to 1952 she won ten medals in singles, doubles, and team events in the World Table Tennis Championships. The ten medals included three gold medals; two in team events with England at the 1947 World Table Tennis Championships and 1948 World Table Tennis Championships and one in the women's doubles with Vera Thomas in 1948. She also won an English Open title. Personal life She married Kent and Essex county player Ronnie Hook on 12 January 1950. Table Tennis
Table tennis, also known as ping-pong and whiff-whaff, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball, also known as the ping-pong ball, back and forth across a table using small solid rackets. It takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, the rules are generally as follows: Players must allow a ball played toward them to bounce once on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side. A point is scored when a player fails to return the ball within the rules. Play is fast and demands quick reactions. Spinning the ball alters its trajectory and limits an opponent's options, giving the hitter a great advantage. World Table Tennis Championships
The World Table Tennis Championships are table tennis competitions sanctioned by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). The World Championships have been held since 1926, biennially since 1957. Five individual events, which include men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's double and mixed doubles, are currently held in odd numbered years. The World Team Table Tennis Championships, which include men's team and women's team events, were first their own competition in 2000. The Team Championships are held in even numbered years. Gold Medal
A gold medal is a medal awarded for highest achievement in a non-military field. Its name derives from the use of at least a fraction of gold in form of plating or alloying in its manufacture. Since the eighteenth century, gold medals have been awarded in the arts, for example, by the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, usually as a symbol of an award to give an outstanding student some financial freedom. Others offer only the prestige of the award. Many organizations now award gold medals either annually or extraordinarily, including various academic societies. Vera Thomas
Vera Sybil Thomas (née Dace; 3 December 1921 – 9 July 1995) was an English international table tennis and tennis player. Table tennis career She won seven medals at the World Table Tennis Championships including three gold medals; two in the team events and one as a member of the winning doubles team in the 1948 World Table Tennis Championships with Peggy Franks. She also won three English Open titles. Tennis career As a tennis player she competed in 15 editions of the Wimbledon Championships between 1946 and 1961. Her best result in the singles was reaching the fourth round in 1948 in which she lost to Nelly Landry. Personal life She married Arthur Thomas in 1947 and became Vera Thomas-Dace. English Open (table Tennis)
The English Open was a table tennis tournament in England, last staged by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) in Sheffield in 2011. History The tournament was first held as the English Open in 1927 by the English Table Tennis Association. Apart from a wartime break in the early 1940s, the tournament was held every year until 1980, and then every two years until the early 1990s. In 1996, the ITTF decided to include that year's English Open in Kettering as the very first event of the first ever ITTF Pro Tour. The tournament went on to feature in the ITTF Pro Tour five more times, in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2009 and in 2011, when it was held for the last time. The record for the most men's singles tournament wins is held by Richard Bergmann, who won six titles between 1939 and 1954, including two while representing Austria and four while representing England.
