Management Sciences For Health
Management Sciences for Health (MSH) is a global nonprofit organization based in Arlington, Virginia that provides governments, health organizations, and the private sector with strategies, tools, and management support to deliver high-functioning health systems. According to the organization’s website, since its founding in 1971, MSH has worked in more than 150 countries. History MSH was founded in 1971 by Dr. Ronald O’Connor, who was inspired by a trip to visit a mission hospital in Nepal while he was in medical school. O’Connor credits Dr. Noboru Iwamura, a Japanese doctor working at the hospital, with introducing him to the Tao of Leadership and teaching him an approach that emphasized reaching out to communities and showing villagers how they could organize to promote their own health, using the hospital as a last resort. Noboru Iwamura
was a Japanese biologist, medical doctor and professor of medicine. He was the only survivor, amongst eighty high school classmates, of the 1945 Hiroshima bombing. This experience led him to resolve to live his life for others. Under the UMN program, Iwamura was the first Japanese volunteer to arrive in Nepal, a nation struck with a pandemic of tuberculosis. He spent 22 years helping those living in deprivation and his efforts laid the foundation for the establishment of multiple medical facilities around the area. Back in Japan, Iwamura founded the Peace, Health, and Human Development Foundation in 1980, in an effort to provide technical training to grassroots leaders from Nepal and Southeast Asia. He went on to establish the International Human Resources Institute in 1985, as a means of sponsorship for rural workers to earn master's degrees in Community Development. Clubfoot
Clubfoot is a birth defect where one or both feet are rotated inward and downward. Congenital clubfoot is the most common congenital malformation of the foot with an incidence of 1 per 1000 births. In approximately 50% of cases, clubfoot affects both feet, but it can present unilaterally causing one leg or foot to be shorter than the other. Most of the time, it is not associated with other problems. Without appropriate treatment, the foot deformity will persist and lead to pain and impaired ability to walk, which can have a dramatic impact on the quality of life. The guide has been published annually since 1986 with the World Health Organization becoming involved in 2000, though has not been updated since 2015. The prices in the guide are specifically for low and middle income countries (LMIC). There are two sources of price data in the guide: Buyers and Suppliers. Buyer prices come from a government agency's competitive (domestic or international) bidding or tendering process.
