Mambo Nights (album)
''Mambo Nights'' is a 2000 album from the Latin Jazz ensemble Conexion Latina. After the Venezuelan musician Alberto Naranjo had done some arrangements for the German salsa band, he was invited to participate as guest director for the recording of the band’s fourth CD, ''Mambo Nights''. The leader of the legendary Trabuco Venezolano, Naranjo also contributed with two compositions and provided five arrangements, along with veterans arrangers Marty Sheller and Oscar Hernández. The voices of Javier Plaza, Osvaldo Fajardo and Yma America, and the guest soloists Dusko Goykovich and Bobby Shew, collaborated with the band to create a boiling festive sound for hard-salsa lovers. Oscar Hernández (born March 22, 1954) is an American pianist, arranger and producer of Puerto Rican descent. Kenny Dorham
McKinley Howard "Kenny" Dorham (August 30, 1924 – December 5, 1972) was an American jazz trumpeter, singer, and composer. Dorham's talent is frequently lauded by critics and other musicians, but he never received the kind of attention or public recognition from the jazz establishment that many of his peers did. For this reason, writer Gary Giddins said that Dorham's name has become "virtually synonymous with ''underrated''." Dorham composed the jazz standard "Blue Bossa", which first appeared on Joe Henderson's album ''Page One''. Biography Dorham was one of the most active bebop trumpeters. Bobby Shew
Bobby Shew (born March 4, 1941) is an American jazz trumpet and flugelhorn player. Biography He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States. After leaving college in 1960, Shew was drafted into the U.S. Army and played trumpet and toured with the NORAD joint forces band stationed in Colorado Springs. After leaving the Army, Shew joined Tommy Dorsey's band and then played with the Woody Herman and then the Buddy Rich big bands in the mid-to-late 1960s. He was a trumpeter in Tom Jones's band while in Las Vegas, and is featured on his 1971 live album ''Live at Caesar's Palace''. In 1972, Shew moved from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, where he did much studio work as well as play with some of the top big bands of the era through the end of the 1970s: Akiyoshi/Tabackin, Louis Bellson, Maynard Ferguson, and others. Marty Sheller
Marty Sheller (born March 15, 1940 in Newark, New Jersey, died September 17, 2022) was an American jazz trumpeter and arranger, who plays primarily in latin jazz idioms. Sheller initially studied percussion, but switched to trumpet as a teenager. He played with Hugo Dickens in Harlem, and arranged for Sabu Martinez, and began working with Afro-Latin percussionists such as Louie Ramirez and Frankie Malabe. In 1962 he became a trumpeter in Mongo Santamaria's band, and worked with Santamaria for more than forty years as a composer and arranger. He also had an extensive association with Fania Records as a house arranger, working with Joe Bataan, Ruben Blades, Willie Colon, Larry Harlow, Hector Lavoe, and Ismael Miranda. Salsa Music
Salsa music is a style of Latin American music. Because most of the basic musical components predate the labeling of salsa, there have been many controversies regarding its origin. Most songs considered as salsa are primarily based on son montuno, with elements of Mambo (music), mambo, Latin jazz, Bomba (Puerto Rico), bomba, plena and guaracha. All of these elements are adapted to fit the basic son montuno template when performed within the context of salsa. Originally the name salsa was used to label commercially several styles of Latin dance music, but nowadays it is considered a musical style on its own and one of the staples of Latin American culture. The first self-identified salsa bands were predominantly assembled by Cubans, Cuban and Puerto Ricans, Puerto Rican musicians in New York City in the '70s.
