Magnum Band
Magnum Band is a kompa band formed on June 24, 1976 by (a.k.a. Dadou), former musician of the group Tabou Combo, and his brother (a.k.a. Tico) in Miami. In the late 70s the group became known in various clubs of Queens and Brooklyn thanks to the substantial Haitian community there. In 1980 they made their first international tour. In 1996, they performed at the 1996 Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Atlanta. In 1997, the band represented Haiti in the first World Creole Music Festival in Dominica. Throughout their tours in Guadeloupe in 2003 in France, Canada and the United States, the Magnum Band participated in the promotion of Haitian compas, and strengthened its footprint. The group celebrated its thirtieth anniversary in June 2006. The Haitian compas style interpreted by Magnum Band can be categorised as "old school". Compas
Compas, also known as compas direct or compas direk (; Haitian Creole: ''konpa'', ''kompa'' or ''kompa dirèk''), is a modern méringue dance music genre of Haiti. The genre was popularized following the creation of Ensemble Aux Callebasses in (1955), which became Ensemble Nemours Jean-Baptiste In 1957. The frequent tours of the many Haitian bands have cemented the style in all the Caribbean. Therefore, compas is the main music of several countries such as Dominica and the French Antilles. Tabou Combo
Tabou Combo is a Haitian compas band that was founded in 1968 in Pétion-Ville, a suburb of Port-au-Prince. The orchestra has performed throughout the world (North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and especially in the Caribbean). Tabou Combo was the first Haitian band to perform in Japan, Ivory Coast, Senegal among others, and were named the "Official Panamanian Band" in Panama due to their popularity, while also becoming the first Caribbean band to have a number one single in the French Hit Parade. They dynamically sung their songs in both English, French, Spanish and in Haitian Creole. Tabou Combo refer to themselves as the "ambassadors of konpa." The opening ceremony of the 1996 Summer Olympics took place in the evening on Friday, July 19 at the Centennial Olympic Stadium, Atlanta, United States. The World Creole Music Festival (WCMF) is an annual three-day music festival hosted on the island of Dominica during the final weekend in October, as a conclusion to Creole heritage month. WCMF is a noted festival of Dominica, and it provides entertainment dedicated to the advancement of global Creole culture and music. History The World Creole Music Festival was launched to promote Dominican tourism and create a platform for indigenous Dominican music. The festival begins on the last Friday in October each year.
