West Carleton-March Ward
West Carleton-March Ward (Ward 5) is a city ward in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The ward was created for the 2000 election when West Carleton Township was amalgamated into the new city of Ottawa. At that time, the ward was called West Carleton Ward. It consisted of the former West Carleton Township. In 2006, the boundaries were altered, and the ward was given its present name. Its southern border became Highway 7 and the Queensway and it lost some areas in the southeastern part of the ward. The ward also added the rural northern portion of the former city of Kanata. Its population in 2006 was 23,400 – the second least populated ward. Its area is 763 km², the largest city ward. James Maclaren
James Maclaren (March 19, 1818 – February 10, 1892) was an early settler and entrepreneur in western Quebec. Maclaren was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1818. He came to Richmond in Upper Canada with his family in 1822. The family then settled in Torobolton Township and then moved to Wakefield in Lower Canada in the 1840s. Maclaren and his brother David opened a general store, grist mill, woollen mill and brick plant in Wakefield. James also became involved in the timber trade. In 1853, Maclaren leased a sawmill in New Edinburgh from Thomas McKay with partners including Moss Kent Dickinson and Joseph Merrill Currier. By 1861, he was able to buy out his partners and, in 1866, he purchased the mills after McKay's death. In 1864, again with partners, he bought sawmills at Buckingham, later buying out his partners. Buckingham is a former town located in the Outaouais region in the western portion of the province of Quebec, Canada. Since 1 January 2002, it has been part of the amalgamated city of Gatineau, which merged five former municipalities, including Masson-Angers, Buckingham, Hull, Aylmer and Gatineau, into a single entity. Jack MacLaren (born ) is a Canadian former politician who represented the eastern Ontario riding of Carleton—Mississippi Mills in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2011 to 2018. Originally elected as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, he was removed from the party's legislative caucus in 2017 by party leader Patrick Brown after a video recording surfaced of him suggesting that the party would repeal Franco-Ontarian language rights in the province. MacLaren announced later that day that he had joined the Trillium Party of Ontario, becoming that party's first MPP. Background MacLaren was born in Woodlawn, Ontario in 1951.
