Mabel CondemarÃn
Mabel CondemarÃn (November 3, 1931 – March 30, 2004) was a Chilean educator. Biography Mabel CondemarÃn carried out her primary studies at the St. Mary of Iquique school, later studying at the José Abelardo Núñez Normal School and subsequently La Serena Superior Normal School. Specialising in teaching reading, she authored numerous publications in this area, several of them in partnership with her husband, the teacher Felipe Alliende. She eventually became an academic of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. In January 1990 she became part of the Ministry of Education, and was placed in charge of the program of language for 900 schools with low academic performance (P-900.) In recognition of her efforts in propagating new teaching methods for reading throughout Latin America, a number of schools named themselves after her, one in Peru and another in Colombia. Iquique
Iquique () is a port city and commune in northern Chile, capital of both the Iquique Province and Tarapacá Region. It lies on the Pacific coast, west of the Pampa del Tamarugal, which is part of the Atacama Desert. It has a population of 191,468 according to the 2017 census. It is also the main commune of Greater Iquique. The city developed during the heyday of the saltpetre mining in the Atacama Desert in the 19th century. Normal School
A normal school or normal college is an institution created to train teachers by educating them in the norms of pedagogy and curriculum. In the 19th century in the United States, instruction in normal schools was at the high school level, turning out primary school teachers. Most such schools are now called teacher training colleges or teachers' colleges, currently require a high school diploma for entry, and may be part of a comprehensive university. La Serena, Chile
La Serena () is a city and commune in northern Chile, capital of the Coquimbo Region. Founded in 1544, it is the country's second oldest city after the national capital, Santiago. The National Prize for Education Sciences ( es, Premio Nacional de Ciencias de la Educación, links=no) was created in 1979 and is awarded every two years, in accordance with Law 19169 of 1992. It is part of the National Prize of Chile granted by the Ministry of Education.
