MV Holoholo
M/V ''Holoholo'' was a charter research vessel for the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii (RCUH) for the Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) project. On 10 December 1978 Holoholo went missing at sea, presumed capsized and sank with all hands. History ''Holoholo'' was built between 1959 and 1961 by E. R. Simmerer and launched in 1963 as a pleasure craft for Arthur F. Stubenberg, who had commissioned her. On 15 September 1978 Stubenberg sold ''Holoholo'' to John Laney for $75,000 by multiple payments until the amount was reached. John Laney had ''Holoholo'' converted into a research vessel. In October 1978 RCUH chartered ''Holoholo'' for OTEC and had its first voyage for OTEC. On 9 December 1978 left Honolulu for Kawaihae to arrive on the 11th. Scow
A scow is a smaller type of barge. Some scows are rigged as sailing scows. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, scows carried cargo in coastal waters and inland waterways, having an advantage for navigating shallow water or small harbours. Scows were in common use in the American Great Lakes and other parts of the U.S., Canada, southern England, and New Zealand. In modern times their main purpose is for recreation and racing. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) uses the ocean thermal gradient between cooler deep and warmer shallow or surface seawaters to run a heat engine and produce useful work, usually in the form of electricity. OTEC can operate with a very high capacity factor and so can operate in base load mode. The denser cold water masses, formed by ocean surface water interaction with cold atmosphere in quite specific areas of the North Atlantic and the Southern Ocean, sink into the deep sea basins and spread in entire deep ocean by the thermohaline circulation. Upwelling of cold water from the deep ocean is replenished by the downwelling of cold surface sea water. Kawaihae is an unincorporated community on the west side of the island of Hawaii in the U.S. state of Hawaii, north of Kailua-Kona. Capsizing or keeling over occurs when a boat or ship is rolled on its side or further by wave action, instability or wind force beyond the angle of positive static stability or it is upside down in the water. Poop Deck
In naval architecture, a poop deck is a deck that forms the roof of a cabin built in the rear, or " aft", part of the superstructure of a ship. The name originates from the French word for stern, ''la poupe'', from Latin ''puppis''. Transom (nautical)
A transom is the vertical reinforcement which strengthens the stern of a boat. This flat termination of the stern is typically above the waterline. The term was used as far back as Middle English in the 1300s, having come from Latin ''transversus'' (transverse) via Old French ''traversain'' (set crosswise). The stern of a boat is typically vertical. It can be raked such that there is an overhang above the water, as at the bow. A reverse transom is angled from the waterline forwards.
