The M6 is a metropolitan route in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in South Africa that connects the eastern part of Despatch with the Uitenhage (Kariega) town centre. Route The M6 begins at a junction with the M19 route east of the Despatch town centre (west of the Azalea Park suburb), just 190 metres north of the M19's interchange with the R75 Route. The M6 begins by going northwards as Uitenhage Road, then turning westwards, to reach another interchange with the R75 Route, where it leaves Despatch and enters Uitenhage Uitenhage ( ; ), officially renamed Kariega, is a South African town in the Eastern Cape Province. Uitenhage
Uitenhage ( ; ), officially renamed Kariega, is a South African town in the Eastern Cape Province. It is well known for the Volkswagen factory located there, which is the biggest car factory on the African continent. Along with the city of Port Elizabeth and the small town of Despatch, it forms the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality. History Uitenhage was founded on 25 April 1804 by ''landdrost'' (district magistrate) Jacob Glen Cuyler and named in honour of the Cape's Commissioner-General Jacob Abraham Uitenhage de Mist by the Dutch Cape Colony governor, Jan Willem Janssens. Uitenhage formed part of the district of Graaff Reinet (shortly after its short-lived secession). The Cape Colony received a degree of independence when "Responsible Government" was declared in 1872. Despatch is a small town in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa situated between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage with an estimated population of 40 000. It forms part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality which includes Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, and has collectively a population of over 1.3 million. History The town of Despatch is situated on rich clay soil and in the late 1800s was the site of a flourishing brick industry. Despatch's name derives from this brick industry history on the account that bricks were dispatched from the original railway siding. Many of the older buildings in Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth were built from these bricks. Most of these early bricks can be identified by the word 'Despatch' imprinted on the top and bottom of the brick. Port Elizabeth, like most South African cities, uses Metropolitan or "M" routes for important intra-city routes, a layer below National (N) roads and Regional (R) roads. Each city's M roads are independently numbered. These roads naturally interact with Port Elizabeth's N and R roads. The N2 enters Port Elizabeth from the west before veering north when it reaches the coastline of Algoa Bay. The R102 roughly parallels the N2, but runs further south, into the city centre before turning north. The R75 leaves the R102 as it begins leaving the city centre from the north, and heads in a roughly north-west direction towards Uitenhage. It then veers north skirting the town centre and continuing on towards Graaff-Reinet. Of the five three-digit R roads in the city, one, the R333 seems to be no longer in use, with the road instead described as the M6. The R75 is a provincial route in Eastern Cape, South Africa that connects Graaff-Reinet with Gqeberha via Despatch, Kariega and Jansenville. Route Nelson Mandela Bay The R75 begins at the intersection with the R102 (Govan Mbeki Road) in Sydenham, just north of the Gqeberha city centre as a dual-carriage roadway and heads in a north-westerly direction as ''Commercial Road''. It intersects with the N2 highway in the suburb of Korsten and after crossing the N2, it becomes ''Uitenhage Road''. It passes through the large township of Ibhayi before leaving the built up area of Gqeberha (previously known as Port Elizabeth) and intersecting with the M19 metropolitan route at an interchange south-east of Despatch, adjacent to the Azalea Park suburb. Here, the R75 and the M19 switch roads, with the M19 becoming the northwards road (Uitenhage Road) and the R75 becoming the road westwards, immediately becoming a dual-carriageway freeway. The R334 is a Regional Route in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality of South Africa that connects the N2 west of Port Elizabeth to the N2 at Coega north of Port Elizabeth via Uitenhage. The middle section of the route is also designated as the M20 metropolitan route (labelled on road signage). Route The R334 begins at a junction with the N2 National Route north-east of Port Elizabeth (7.5 km south-west of Colchester), heading west-south-west. It is initially co-signed with the R102 for 10 kilometres before the R334 becomes its own road westwards named Daniel Pienaar Street. It runs through the northern parts of Motherwell, where it forms a four-way-junction with the R335. 16 kilometres after the R335 junction, the R334 crosses the R75 to enter Uitenhage (Kariega).
