The following is a list of all urban rail transit systems in Latin America, ranked by passenger ridership. These kinds of systems are most commonly known as ''metro'' (or ''subway'' in English), but may also be known as ''subte'', ''tren'', or ''tranvía'' systems. Daily and annual passengers ridership figures in this chart are based on annual and daily (not just weekday) average passenger trips. The year of the source date varies and is provided on the right. Overall, Brazil has the largest number of metros, with 12 such systems, followed by Venezuela with 4 metro systems. The Mexico City Metro has the highest passenger ridership from a single operator in Latin America, and second in the Americas, after the New York City Subway. Panama Metro
The Panama Metro ( es, Metro de Panamá) is a rapid transit system in Panama City, Panama. It links the south and the east of the metropolitan area to the city center. The metro was inaugurated on April 5, 2014, and it entered revenue service two weeks later. The Metro was built to relieve the traffic congestion between the city and San Miguelito District and to offer commuters a viable alternative to road transport, as the Metrobus transport system was suffering multiple issues. The Metro operates seven days a week and 365 days a year. Its hours are Monday-Friday 05:00–23:00, Saturday 05:00–22:00, and Sundays and holidays 07:00–22:00. The Santo Domingo Metro ( es, Metro de Santo Domingo) is a rapid transit system in Greater Santo Domingo. Serving the capital of the Dominican Republic, it is the most extensive metro system in the insular Caribbean and Central American region by length and number of stations. It began operation in 2004. The Metro is a major part of the "National Master Plan" to improve transportation in Greater Santo Domingo and the rest of the nation.
