Leonard Oliver (cricketer)
Leonard Oliver (18 October 1886 – 22 January 1948) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1908 and 1924. Oliver was born at Glossop, Derbyshire. He made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1908 season in a drawn match against Lancashire. In his first three years he scored moderately and was frequently caught out. He achieved his first century 104 not out against Leicestershire in the 1910 season. In the 1911 season his average almost doubled and he scored a century against Hampshire. In the following three years he maintained his form, scoring centuries against Warwickshire in the 1913 season and becoming the club's top scorer that year. He scored a century against Northamptonshire in the 1914 season. Cricket was then suspended during the First World War. Derbyshire County Cricket Club In 1920
Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1920 was the English cricket club Derbyshire's fiftieth season. It was the club's twenty-second season in the County Championship and the most disastrous season ever experienced by any side since the County Championship was established. Derbyshire lost 17 of the 18 matches played and the other was abandoned without a ball being bowled. 1920 season John Chapman was captain for the season, having held the post twice before World War I. The team was very unstable. Thirty eight players played for Derbyshire in the season, but only six played in more than half the matches. The club suffered from the absence of devastating bowler Billy Bestwick for all but one match, in which he took seven wickets, while other players such as Thomas Forrester and Arnold Warren were drawing to the end of their career. George Buckston
George Moreton Buckston (12 March 1881 – 24 November 1942) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Cambridge University in 1903, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and Derbyshire between 1905 and 1921. Buckston was born in Hope, Derbyshire and was educated at Eton and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He scored 45 and 4 for Eton v Harrow at Lord's in 1900. He played for Cambridge University from the 1903 season during which he played five games. He played one first-class game for MCC in 1904 which was against Derbyshire and then joined Derbyshire in the 1905 season. Buckston made his County Championship debut for Derbyshire against Northamptonshire. Derbyshire won the match by an innings margin, Northamptonshire limited to just 52 runs in their first innings. Buckston played no further matches during the 1905 season, and Derbyshire finished third-bottom in the Championship. This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. However the club continued to play first class counties and most of the players carried on with the club. Richard Baggallay (cricketer)
Richard Romer Claude Baggallay (4 May 1884 – 12 December 1975) was an English army officer and cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1912 and 1919 and captained the side in 1913, 1914 and 1919. Bagallay was born at Kensington the son of Claude Baggallay K.C. a barrister of Wilderwick, East Grinstead, Sussex. He was educated at Marlborough College and joined the 11th Hussars. Baggallay made his cricketing debut for Derbyshire in the 1912 season playing in two matches, the first a draw against the Australians in which he made little impression. He was captain in the 1913 season when Derbyshire finished 13th in the table and again in the 1914 season when they finished 12th. He then fought in World War I between 1914 and 1919. He served in the Irish Guards and was successively captain and major, seeing service at the Somme and Ypres. He was mentioned in despatches and awarded DSO and MC in 1919. It was their twenty sixth season in the County Championship and they failed to win a match, finishing seventeenth in the County Championship. 1924 season Guy Jackson was in his third season as captain. After a steady rise since in the championship table since the low point of 1920, the team slumped to the bottom again in 1924 without winning a match.
