Derbyshire County Cricket Club Seasons
This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. However the club continued to play first class counties and most of the players carried on with the club. Derbyshire County Cricket Club
Derbyshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Derbyshire. Its limited overs team is called the Derbyshire Falcons in reference to the famous peregrine falcon which nests on the Derby Cathedral (it was previously called the Derbyshire Scorpions until 2005 and the Phantoms until 2010). Founded in 1870, the club held first-class status from its first match in 1871 until 1887. Because of poor performances and lack of fixtures in some seasons, Derbyshire then lost its status for seven seasons until it was invited into the County Championship in 1895. Derbyshire is also classified as a List A team since the beginning of limited overs cricket in 1963; and classified as a senior Twenty20 team since 2003. Robert Smith (Derbyshire Cricketer)
Robert Posnett Smith (1 November 1848 – 1 May 1899), later known as Robert Posnett Stevens, was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1871 and 1884 and was captain of the side from 1876 to 1883. He was a member of the team that played Derbyshire's first match in May 1871. Smith was born in Sawley, the son of John Smith a farmer and his wife Ruth. He was educated at Castle Donington School in Leicestershire and continued farming at Sawley. Smith took part in the very first fixture played by Derbyshire as a county team in the 1871 season, against a Lancashire side who posted the lowest total against Derbyshire in the history of first-class cricket. William Cropper
William Cropper (27 December 1862 – 13 January 1889) was an English cricketer and footballer who played cricket for Derbyshire County Cricket Club between 1882 and 1888 and football, as a centre forward, once for Derby County. He was one of nineteen sportsmen to achieve the Derbyshire Double of playing cricket for Derbyshire and football for Derby County, but died aged 26 as a result of an accident while playing football for Staveley. Cropper was born at Brimington, Derbyshire, the son of Thomas and Mary Cropper, and was a bricklayer. He made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1882 season. He also played for the North of England team. He shared most wickets for the club in the 1883, 1884, 1885 and 1886 seasons. In 1886, he played one football match for Derby County. Wallis Evershed
Wallis Evershed (10 May 1863 – 8 May 1911) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1882 and 1884. Evershed was born in Stapenhill, the son of Sydney Evershed the brewer and MP for Burton. He was educated at Clifton College"Clifton College Register" Muirhead, J.A.O. ref no 2166: Bristol; J.W Arrowsmith for Old Cliftonian Society; April, 1948 where he was awarded his cap (for rugby) and was captain of the XI in 1882. Evershed made his first-class debut for Derbyshire in an innings victory against Sussex in July 1882, when he scored 19 runs in Derbyshire's innings. He made one further appearance during the 1882 season, in a defeat by Yorkshire. Evershed made eight appearances in the 1883 season, playing in all Derbyshire's County matches and twice against Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Derbyshire County Cricket Club In 1883
Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1883 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for twelve years. They won two first class matches out of ten. 1883 season Derbyshire played two county matches each against Lancashire, Yorkshire, Surrey and Sussex, and two against MCC. They won two of their matches and lost six. Robert Smith was captain for his eighth and last season. In a sparse season without any centuries, Wallis Evershed was top scorer and William Cropper James Brelsford shared the most wickets. There were no long term additions to the team but George Earl, Joseph Needham, George Yates and Percy Exham made their only career appearances and Thomas Evans made his two career appearances for Derbyshire during the season. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1882 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for eleven years. The team played eight first class matches and won one of them 1882 season Derbyshire played six county games, two each against Lancashire, Sussex and Yorkshire. They also played a first-class match against MCC and a match against the touring Australians Derbyshire won one game against Sussex and lost seven. They did not play any additional matches. The captain for the year was Robert Smith in his sixth year as captain. The most significant new arrival was William Chatterton who was to score over 10000 runs for the club. William Cropper made his debut and was regular top bowler for the club until a football accident in 1889. James Disney
James Joseph Disney (20 November 1859 – 24 June 1934) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire as wicket-keeper between 1881 and 1890. Disney was born in Butterley near Ripley, Derbyshire and became a plumber as his main career. He played for twenty-three Colts of England against the MCC in 1881 and in that year made his debut for Derbyshire in a victory against Sussex setting his place as wicket keeper for the club. In the 1882 season, he continued to keep wicket, although as a batsman he found himself getting out cheaply. Derbyshire played host to the touring Australians, and Disney found himself out to the bowling of Eugene Palmer on two occasions. He played a full season in 1883 but in 1884 Disney took a year out of the side, when Thomas Mycroft filled the wicket-keeping slot. He returned in 1885, when he was once again a first-team pick. Ludford Docker
Ludford Charles Docker (26 November 1860 – 1 August 1940) was a businessman and an English cricketer. He played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1881 and 1886, captaining the side in 1884, and for Warwickshire in 1894 and 1895. Early life Docker was born in Smethwick, Staffordshire, the son of Ralph Docker and his wife Sarah Sankey. His father was a solicitor in practice at Birmingham and Smethwick who took on a large number of public appointments. He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham. Cricket career Docker played cricket for Birmingham and Kidderminster in 1879 and also played for Derbyshire Colts in the 1879 season. His first-class debut was for Derbyshire in the 1881 season. He topped their batting averages that season. He played 48 first-class matches for Derbyshire and captained the team in the 1884 season. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1881 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for ten years. The team played nine first class matches and won two of them. 1881 season By 1881 Derbyshire had become established in the county cricket circuit and played eight county games, two each against Lancashire, Kent, Sussex and Yorkshire. Derbyshire won one game against each of Sussex and Kent. They also had a match against MCC which was lost. The captain for the year was Robert Smith in his fifth year as captain. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1880 was the tenth season of the English cricket club Derbyshire. Derbyshire played Lancashire and Yorkshire, whom they had played in the previous season. However, instead of Hampshire and Nottinghamshire, they played against Sussex for the first time and Kent, whom they had played in a previous season. 1880 season Derbyshire played eight county games in 1880, two each against Lancashire, Kent, Sussex and Yorkshire. They also played a first-class match against MCC and a match against the touring Australians. Derbyshire won one match against Kent and one against Sussex. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1879 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire played their ninth season. Of the county sides Derbyshire played in the previous year they had matches against Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. However they did not play Hampshire or Kent. Derbyshire made a first innings total of 16 against Nottingham at Trent Bridge which remains a record for lowest number of runs in an innings for Derbyshire 1879 season Derbyshire played six county games in 1879, two each against Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1878 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire played their eighth season. Nottinghamshire played Derbyshire again after a two-year break, joining Yorkshire Hampshire, Lancashire and Kent as the fifth county to play Derbyshire 1878 season In 1878, Derbyshire played two county games each against Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Kent and one match each against MCC and All England XI.
