Wallis Evershed
Wallis Evershed (10 May 1863 – 8 May 1911) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1882 and 1884. Evershed was born in Stapenhill, the son of Sydney Evershed the brewer and MP for Burton. He was educated at Clifton College"Clifton College Register" Muirhead, J.A.O. ref no 2166: Bristol; J.W Arrowsmith for Old Cliftonian Society; April, 1948 where he was awarded his cap (for rugby) and was captain of the XI in 1882. Evershed made his first-class debut for Derbyshire in an innings victory against Sussex in July 1882, when he scored 19 runs in Derbyshire's innings. He made one further appearance during the 1882 season, in a defeat by Yorkshire. Evershed made eight appearances in the 1883 season, playing in all Derbyshire's County matches and twice against Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). William Evershed
William Evershed (25 November 1818 – 24 November 1887) was an English first-class cricketer who made his debut for Hampshire against Petworth in 1845. Evershed represented Hampshire against the same opposition again in the same season. In 1849 Evershed made a single appearance for Sussex against Surrey. Evershed died at Wisborough Green, Sussex on 24 November 1887. Geoffrey Bell (cricketer)
Geoffrey Foxall Bell (16 April 1896 – 17 January 1984) was an English cricketer and educationalist. He was a right-handed batsman who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire and Oxford University. He won the Military Cross during World War I and became headmaster of two schools. Early life Bell was born in Stapenhill, Derbyshire and was related to the Evershed brewing family. He made his first County Championship appearance in 1914, though his cricketing career was summarily halted by the First World War. In 1915, he was commissioned in the Royal Field Artillery and was awarded the Military Cross in 1919. Career After the war he went to study at Oxford University, and returned to the arena of first-class cricket playing for the University in 1919. He played his first of seven games, most of which were against assembled elevens such as the Gentlemen of England and HDG Leveson-Gower's XI. Edmund Maynard
Edmund Anthony Jefferson Maynard (10 February 1861 – 10 January 1931) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire from 1880 to 1887 and captained the side for two seasons. Maynard was the son of Edmund Gilling Maynard, of West House, Chesterfield. He was educated at Harrow School, where he was a member of the cricket eleven in 1879 and played his first game for Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1880. He was at Trinity College, Cambridge and played cricket for Cambridge University Cricket Club from 1881 to 1883. After leaving Cambridge he travelled extensively, shooting bear in the Rocky Mountains in 1882, and ibex and other species of deer in India and Kashmir in 1883 and 1884. He played regularly for Derbyshire from 1880 to 1887, appearing in 37 matches. He captained the side in 1885 and 1886 and for part of 1887. Marylebone Cricket Club
Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is a cricket club founded in 1787 and based since 1814 at Lord's Cricket Ground, which it owns, in St John's Wood, London. The club was formerly the governing body of cricket retaining considerable global influence. In 1788, the MCC took responsibility for the laws of cricket, issuing a revised version that year. Changes to these Laws are now determined by the International Cricket Council (ICC), but the copyright is still owned by MCC. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1883 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for twelve years. They won two first class matches out of ten. 1883 season Derbyshire played two county matches each against Lancashire, Yorkshire, Surrey and Sussex, and two against MCC. They won two of their matches and lost six. Robert Smith was captain for his eighth and last season. In a sparse season without any centuries, Wallis Evershed was top scorer and William Cropper James Brelsford shared the most wickets. There were no long term additions to the team but George Earl, Joseph Needham, George Yates and Percy Exham made their only career appearances and Thomas Evans made his two career appearances for Derbyshire during the season. Yorkshire County Cricket Club is one of 18 first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Yorkshire. Yorkshire are the most successful team in English cricketing history with 33 County Championship titles, including one shared.
